I like the effect, but I think it's more for the way it makes Ed's voice sound like it collapses into the sound of the guitar solo.

What? I don't hear that at all.
The note is an E4 which was confirmed when Ed sang it live. It sounds higher in studio because of the echo effect.

Also, in Pendulum it's applied poorly. It grates the ears.

this sounds sooooo good

okay, I gotta say I may just prefer hearing that part clean. I don't have a problem with the studio effect, though

pearl jam releases one of its best songs it the last 15 years and half of this thread focuses on peoples dislike of one part of the song. this is why RM gets a bad rap.

I just reckon it must be awful to post continually on a Pearl Jam message board if you don't like the band's output over recent years. Or maybe being contrary gives people a boost? I dunno.

I just listened to that live performance. Wonderful performance, but Eddie absolutely does not sound like he is singing an octave higher on the studio version because of that effect. It sounds like the exact same pitch with a bunch of distortion.

That performance has me pretty excited for the boots from this tour.

This is the best song on the album, and the vocal effect is cool. The only fault of this song is that it's not long enough.

I would love for it to be about 5 minutes

this is a great opener. I hope they open it every night on the tour, and that this speaks to an interest in the band for writing more songs like this.

I'm really, really looking forward to hearing these shows (and making an O'Brien-less Lightning Bolt mix from the live tracks).

what the fuck is everyone on about?
the 'long agoooooooo-owwowowowow" part is one the best moments of the song, as far as I'm concerned
it's like they borrowed a bit from the electronic genre and it blends in perfectly
