I would say it’s totally intentional. I love it. Anderson is aiming for absurd comedy and he achieves it perfectly.

I just feels like two actors acting at each other. Takes me completely out of it. I feel nothing.

Have you ever watched melodrama? I feel like it’s in a similar vein. Acting with a capital A. I’m into it.

Even by melodramatic standards it feels over the top to me.

Christmas Vacation sucks, but Randy Quaid is really great in it.

I’ll overlook that first statement due to the fact your second one is spot on.

It's deeply bizarre to me that the big injustice the audience is supposed be with Clark on is that his boss doesn't give him a big enough bonus to buy a pool. The 1980s were a very different time.

The only line I consistently laugh at is, "Are you serious, Clark?"

And I don't think it was as beloved as it is now until after it had been out for like ten years. Its just kinda funnyish.

I don't know if Christmas Vacation is objectively good or funny, but it's my favorite Christmas movie. Mostly because my family watches it every year. There are some great lines that still make me laugh.

This stands out for sure.
