I was at Outside Lands for work and I didn't "get" 90% of the bands on any stage. It all felt pretty dead to me.

I think rock is going to have a revival soon. Now that the thought of making money is gone from new bands, I think attitude is going to come back. Rock n roll needs attitude, authentic attitude. I thin that attitude is going to come back because if you're not going to make any money why make any compromises on your music or look. I think it will make a swing back to sex and drugs and rock n roll. Where it belongs.

I am curious to hear this as well. I don't listen to the mainstream rock bands, but I was under the impressions they are out there and making music and money.
Black Keys, Jack White, Queens of the Stone Age, Band of Horses, Cage the Elephant? Aren't these the big names in rock now?

shit. I have not heard of one of those bands. I should try and stay a little more current with the bigger names...if for nothing else, just to know.

Pearl Jam. 70's rock. 60's rock. The last two are 40 and 50 years old. Does anyone under 35 even care about this music?

I'm not sure there are "big names". I don't think there is actually a thing called "mainstream" rock music anymore. Fall Out Boy and Paramore are probably the biggest "rock" acts in terms of the Billboard Top 100. Maybe Linkin Park? Foo Fighters?
I don't think any of those bands you or Strat listed are "big" in terms of airplay or sales.

When I say rock it's an umbrella term for a wide range of music. The uniting factor being the attitude it was made with. It's what allows a diverse range of music from the Beatles, to the Stones, to Led Zeppelin, to Genesis be rock but Neil Diamond not. Sex and drugs and rock n roll. I think to a large extent that bands like Pearl Jam, Black Keys are just corporations that play rock music. The essence is long gone.
I think Sticky Fingers is an example of a current band that has embraced all the attitude and is compelling for it. The attitude is essential as it leads to lack of compromise on the music. Wanting to be popular but not caring if you please people. That seems lost now. It seems to be all about pleasing people rather than staying true to yourself as an artist.
I think so many bands are just lost now, they have no idea who they are. Our Lady Peace is a prime example. Pearl Jam and U2 fall under this to a lessor extent.
Give me raw passion and attitude. Be a rock star even if your playing to ten people. Because you feel a rock star is what you are and people just haven't caught on yet. I don't want respectable roll models/hypocrites. I want excess and the music comes from that attitude, at least until addictions kick in.

I don't think having "big names" is a requirement for the rock genre to still be alive. I'd say it's alive and kicking, just a little harder to find.

The "big names" are almost always terrible. Who cares?

That new The Dead Weather single is pretty fierce.
