That Black cover sounded fine. If you have a baritone voice and can sing in key that's probably how its gonna sound.

It's fine for what it is, but if I were to tell you that I greatly prefer the original would you think that comment somehow off base?

You preferring Eddie singing Black is totally fine. If you said the cover the guy did sucks that would seem hyperbolic to me cause I can't see it sounding any other way in that setting. Covering that song is probably not the best idea since music fans are so precious about 90's grunge songs but I guess what McP was going for is Eddie's version is note for note the same except Eddie is singing in a slightly deeper register. I think saying the original sucks is probably an over reaction but I wasn't offended I was just standing up for ill advised Black covers.

Yup.

I do agree with stip that ed's version is him in top form, but his version is otherwise such a recreation that it's pretty hyperbolic to go "wow this one is laughably bad while the other is worthy of all the lotion and kleenex I've gone through while listening to it yup yup!"

stip doesn't use lotion.

Lotion is terrible.

He uses the tears of his students after he makes them listen to Backspacer.

Well the indio singer doesn't sound good at all, and Ed is great, so that performance alone can give a song a tremendous lift. And there's a lot more life in both eddie's musical performance and the extra flourishes. The first time I heard the original I was shocked at how much better Eddie's version is. I can't think of many examples where there is that much of a difference.

well yes, but I don't like the who very much. But I don't think Love Reign O'er Me is a bad song. I just like Pearl Jam's more.

All Along the Watchtower has been covered straight a million times by a million people. Surely some of these versions are terrible and some are great.

But basically, if it's an artist that a member of pearl jam has cited as an influence, and it's not U2, REM, Zeppelin, or Springsteen, I probably don't like them.

I can see for miles, won't get fooled again, and baba o riley are okay.
