The actual problem with education, and it's possible solutions, have exactly zero overlap with the politicization thereof.

Negative. I'm currently part of the curriculum department for the University of Washington's medical school, but I'm waiting to see how an opportunity plays out that I'm very excited for.

That's awesome. So what's the transition from middle school social studies (if my memory serves me) to UW medical school curriculum like?

What exactly was insightful? I agree that #blacklivesmatter is mostly unfocused on real issues, that's fine. But then it's just a typical Republican list of causes: black people themselves, teachers' unions, social welfare programs, Democrats, and hip-hop culture. Is it "refreshing" because a black person said it?

His best point was regarding focusing on education as a systemic issue as opposed to the relatively isolated (comparatively) problem of police brutality. I just didn't read anything substantive about how to address that issue, though.

I think it's refreshing to see a politician make some of the humane (and true) connections he does. You and McP are focusing on the overtly political aspects, which I understand, but that's not really how I'm reading it. It's a comment about how flashy political grandstanding is fashionable, but ultimately will do little to solve what's fundamentally wrong. It's less political editorial and more cultural criticism. I think what I respond to so much is that he (rightfully) extrapolates this to pop culture criticism, which is my world.

I will ask: Where does he ever blame black people for anything? Or, for that matter, any of the things you listed (though I will grant you he does take a shot at teachers' unions)? Seems like he is making it pretty clear that what he's blaming is the white power structure underlying all of these issues.

Well, there was a step in between...two years of instructional design work. But it's been really good. I was actually hired to develop a curriculum system that met their rather unusual needs and then train people at the regional sites, but now that's done and I'm feeling restless.

Truly, after a decade of feeling like I was developing a skill set that wasn't particularly valued, spending 18 months in a position like this has been incredibly rewarding.
