Haha, that shithole was Death By Audio. My favorite venue in NY to see bands. After seven years they closed up for good last Saturday. Vice purchased their building and they unable to renew the lease. I've been going there fairly regularly since 2007, when I returned home from college. The first show I caught was Pissed Jeans with Eddy Current Suppression Ring. It was life-affirming, considering I just graduated and wasn't sure of coming home was the right decision. Since then I've been lucky to see tons of great bands and meet great people. It never felt like a scene and people were there first and foremost for the music.

I was lucky enough to catch four or five of the their final shows last week and in addition to the Oh Sees, see Protomartyr, Nots, Lightning Bolt, Metz and Jeff the Brotherhood. They were all billed as "top secret" guests so you had no idea really who was going to play until you got inside. It was a special place. And since I'm waxing nostalgic, here are some more pics from last week.

Lightning Bolt was the final band that played and closed it down. Towards the end of the set these banker boxes full of old issues of Vice appeared and we laid to waste every single one. People were doing snow angels in their remains when it was all said and done.

Here is VERY nice tribute to the place from Impose.

i saw my third jonathan richman show last night. if any of you have a chance to see him, do yourself a favor and check him out. a richman show drips with more sincerity and earnestness than a dev confessional post.

I now have tickets to see Martin Sexton at the Gramercy in March and The Decemberists at the Beacon in April.

i would love to hear your thoughts on jonathan richman, joey. it seems appropriate, on this day in which RM is getting very reflective about the influences of realness and schticks, that i open the gateway to jonathan richman to you. he is the least pretentious, most nakedly emotional, and most relatable musician i've ever heard.

Nick Cave this Sunday, really looking forward to it.

It's billed as a solo Cave show however a cut-down Bad Seeds (Barry Adamson, Warren Ellis, Martyn P. Casey and Thomas Wydler) are still playing, should be interesting.

This was really good, though the show was borderline derailed by a particularly vocal audience member two rows behind us (it even prompted Nick to comment a few times). The band's performance was very loose, even my wife commented on how many times they screwed up.

This tour, which is continuing on through Europe next year I believe, makes me wonder if Nick has finally put the "Bad Seeds" moniker to bed as this was definitely a full-band show for the most part with a few solo piano songs interspersed.

The setlist was:

We Real Cool
Love Letter
Red Right Hand
The Weeping Song (Nick solo)
The Ship Song (Nick solo)
Higgs Boson Blues
Mermaids
From Her to Eternity
God is in the House
I Let Love In
Up Jumped the Devil
Into My Arms
Water's Edge
Black Hair
Darker with the Day
The Mercy Seat (Nick solo)
Jubilee Street

We No Who U R
Breathless
Lay Me Low
Jack the Ripper
People Ain't No Good
