What did we expect? It's been BOB'd!Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:The new digital master of "Avocado" is even more compressed and distorted than the old master, and actually has audible clipping. I seriously doubt this band will ever learn their lesson.
It actually sounds like the songs have been transported into the Backspacer sessions.

Sounds like absolute hell, thank god that Spotify master briefly surfaced.
Too bad we'll almost certainly never have a good sounding official release of this record.

So, I shouldn't be ordering Avocado?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Yeah - I think I might wait on reports back from others before I go ahead and purchase this

It sure sounds like there weren't a lot of these pressed in the first run, considering how lots of retailers are already out of stock or aren't fulfilling all pre-orders right away. Avocado is the only one I'm getting today, and there's no delivery estimate for the other two.

Maybe the band heard the new BoB'd mix and was like, FML let's release the other master. Seems like more than a coincidence.Birds in Hell wrote:Sounds like absolute hell, thank god that Spotify master briefly surfaced.

Just received the reissues here in the UK. I'm disappointed to hear that the remix is no good. I'll give it a spin shortly.

I just got my Save You 7". It's clear vinyl, but the sleeve is just a sturdy plastic sleeve and a paper insert. I thought that was weird, but that's what my Light Years and NAIS singles are like, so I guess they went with authenticity.

Re: Binaural / Riot Act / Avocado Vinyl Re-Issues?
I may be alone in this, but halfway through S/T remix with headphones and I think it's far better than the original mix. Compression is still an issue, but the changes are very noticeable and I like what I'm hearing.
Life Wasted - sounds the same, I may need to give that another listen.
WWS - The opening riff after the drum intro is completely gone, leaving just drums and Jeff's bass line which sounds rad. It makes the verse sound fuller when it starts because the guitars really kick in. There's other little details sprinkled throughout. One of my main problems with this song was always that the chorus didn't sound much different than the verses; there wasn't enough of a signal from one to the other. This sounds much better now, feeling like the chorus really 'kicks in'. Oh, and it ends with Ed doing some kind of murmur/hum that totally isn't present in the original mix.
Comatose - guitars sound crunchier, drums a bit less obtrusive, and there's a bit of reverb placed on Ed's vocals.
Severed Hand - this sounds crazy different to me. Maybe I'm losing my mind, but I could swear that it's a different vocal take from Eddie used here. It almost sounds... a little higher? Just a little. Loads of little bits of guitar licks much more prominent now, especially in the intro. Then the pre-chorus bits - "got some kicks, wanna take a ride?" - suddenly increase the drum presence and the guitars retreat before firing back again after the "I said yeah!" bit. I'm digging it.
Marker In the Sand sounds a lot funkier, and the chorus feels much more cathartic now. I need to listen again to pick up the major changes, but it definitely sounds more uplifting. An improvement for sure.
Parachutes - so far, all I can pick out is the acoustic guitar coming through my right ear is much clearer.

Re: Binaural / Riot Act / Avocado Vinyl Re-Issues?
The amount of harsh, boosted treble on everything BO'B's worked on with the band in the last few years genuinely makes me think he must be suffering from age/exposure related hearing loss.
Listen to Parachutes (particularly Matt's drums) back to back from the old mastering (even the original CD) and his new mix, it's incredible how trashy and unnatural the latter sounds.

There are interesting bits and discoveries here and there (Come Back seems to have a different guitar track), but the EQ is really bad, the listening experience is not very enjoyable.Birds in Hell wrote:The amount of harsh, boosted treble on everything BO'B's worked on with the band in the last few years genuinely makes me think he must be suffering from age/exposure related hearing loss.

At least this re-issue brought a good sounding version of Avocado, from an unexpected place.

Grabbed them all from HDTracks (192/24) so I'm going to put them on my player and see what's up.
