In fairness to every homer announcer out of Chicago though, there's a Chicago homer announcer, and then there's Hawk Harrelson, who's in a class all to himself. I mean, this is a guy last year that said "stats" are ruining the game, and that Gordon Beckham was one of the best 2nd basemen in the league. Not only is he annoying, but he's just a complete imbecile.

To sum up: Harrelson goes on and on about how stupid it is to have Bautista batting second since the best hitter should be hitting third because that's the way it's always been. Bautista later hits a game-tying home run with two out in the ninth inning.

No, this was like 3 years ago.

It was Greg? Stiemsma. He had a game with a couple blocks and Heinsohn said something like "This kid is the best shot blocker I've seen since Bill Russell."

FWIW, I would love if Hawk Harrelson was the announcer of my team. I know most people feel the opposite, but I know what's going on in the game I'd rather be entertained when you're seeing this announce crew for 120ish games.

I think there's a line somewhere between the two options, though. I've probably watched a total of two full games of Hawk Harrelson, and it's been entertaining, but I couldn't handle it for more than a couple games a year. I swear I've watched innings where the White Sox were playing poorly and he didn't say a word the whole inning and just sat there pouting. You can entertain, and you can even be a blatant homer, while still maintaining some semblance of professionalism. It's like Jack Edwards cheering and laughing and taunting when an opponent gets hurt. You have to draw a line somewhere.

For a home team announcer, I would prefer someone who focuses on the home team (obviously) but calls the game in a fair, accurate and unbiased way. Even Buck Martinez has started yelling things like "GET UP, GET OUT!" when someone hits a deep fly ball for the Jays, and it drives me crazy.

I think if you put the homer announcer with another announcer that can keep the guy under control, it works. Brickley will be like "be serious" to Jack Edwards sometimes.

Have you seen the Jack Edwards Drinking Game that some people on reddit put together? The graphic looks like it was made in MS paint 15 years ago and converted from bitmap file 15 times, but it's got some good stuff (like "Finish your drink if Jack mentions Matt Cooke when he's not involved in the current game").

You guys just don't "get" Hawk.







The Hawk taught Yaz what it meant to "Eiffel Tower." Yaz went on to win the Triple Crown that very season. Coincidence? I doubt it.
