total homer announcers out of chicago? never.philpritchard wrote:One of my favourite parts of yesterday's action was when I flipped to the White Sox/Royals game because a couple people I was watching the game with had never heard Hawk Harrelson before. One of the first things he said was "Well, we think we have one of, if not the best outfield in the American League this year."
Melky Cabrera, Adam Eaton, Avasail Garcia.
Among the 15 AL teams, that outfield is probably a borderline top-ten.
In fairness to every homer announcer out of Chicago though, there's a Chicago homer announcer, and then there's Hawk Harrelson, who's in a class all to himself. I mean, this is a guy last year that said "stats" are ruining the game, and that Gordon Beckham was one of the best 2nd basemen in the league. Not only is he annoying, but he's just a complete imbecile.spike wrote:total homer announcers out of chicago? never.philpritchard wrote:One of my favourite parts of yesterday's action was when I flipped to the White Sox/Royals game because a couple people I was watching the game with had never heard Hawk Harrelson before. That reminds me of when Tommy Heinsohn compared some guy on the Celtics(white dude that wasnt around long whose name escapes me) to Bill Russell.MattA75 wrote:My favorite Hawk Harrelson thing ever is when he compared Joe Crede to Brooks Robinson
Was it Eric Montross?numbers wrote:That reminds me of when Tommy Heinsohn compared some guy on the Celtics(white dude that wasnt around long whose name escapes me) to Bill Russell.MattA75 wrote:My favorite Hawk Harrelson thing ever is when he compared Joe Crede to Brooks Robinson
That would be pretty entertaining. This is one of my absolute favourites: http://www.southsidesox.com/2013/6/12/4 ... n-for-hawkpnjguy wrote:can we pleaaassseeeeee have a hawk harrelson thread? It would be the gift that keeps on giving.
No, this was like 3 years ago.RussellManiac12 wrote:Was it Eric Montross?numbers wrote:That reminds me of when Tommy Heinsohn compared some guy on the Celtics(white dude that wasnt around long whose name escapes me) to Bill Russell.MattA75 wrote:My favorite Hawk Harrelson thing ever is when he compared Joe Crede to Brooks Robinson
You have Jack Edwards, Heinsohn, and Zolak in this town...you're more than coverednumbers wrote:It was Greg? Stiemsma. He had a game with a couple blocks and Heinsohn said something like "This kid is the best shot blocker I've seen since Bill Russell."
FWIW, I would love if Hawk Harrelson was the announcer of my team. I know most people feel the opposite, but I know what's going on in the game I'd rather be entertained when you're seeing this announce crew for 120ish games.
I think there's a line somewhere between the two options, though. I've probably watched a total of two full games of Hawk Harrelson, and it's been entertaining, but I couldn't handle it for more than a couple games a year. I swear I've watched innings where the White Sox were playing poorly and he didn't say a word the whole inning and just sat there pouting. You can entertain, and you can even be a blatant homer, while still maintaining some semblance of professionalism. It's like Jack Edwards cheering and laughing and taunting when an opponent gets hurt. You have to draw a line somewhere.numbers wrote:It was Greg? Stiemsma. The other night, Brick referred to trying to get people in front of the net to push and shove and get unpretty goals as "shitty play" and it was glorious.numbers wrote:I think if you put the homer announcer with another announcer that can keep the guy under control, it works. Brickley will be like "be serious" to Jack Edwards sometimes.
Brick is good for at least one on-air vulgarity each season.Simple Torture wrote:The other night, Brick referred to trying to get people in front of the net to push and shove and get unpretty goals as "shitty play" and it was glorious.numbers wrote:I think if you put the homer announcer with another announcer that can keep the guy under control, it works. Have you seen the Jack Edwards Drinking Game that some people on reddit put together? The graphic looks like it was made in MS paint 15 years ago and converted from bitmap file 15 times, but it's got some good stuff (like "Finish your drink if Jack mentions Matt Cooke when he's not involved in the current game").numbers wrote:Brick is good for at least one on-air vulgarity each season.Simple Torture wrote:The other night, Brick referred to trying to get people in front of the net to push and shove and get unpretty goals as "shitty play" and it was glorious.numbers wrote:I think if you put the homer announcer with another announcer that can keep the guy under control, it works.
