watched frances ha last night...

it wasn't really 'bad', but it didn't register much of anything at all when I think about it/

Watched that film last night with Captain America talking about eating babies and how good they taste. It was pretty cool

I loved it, bit I've actually known a lot of people like that and am a struggling shifty artist myself, so I had a little more to chew on. I thought the lead was fantastic.

i don't think the actors or the context was my issue at all...

what exactly did it, uh, say? I mean what exactly did you chew on?

Frances Ha depicted people that I know and share experiences with. The issues the movie deals with, the struggles of friendship and expectation and phoniness and all of that struck a major chord with me. It doesn't have the replay value necessarily that something like Drinking Buddies has, but I thought Frances Ha was one of the best films of 2012. A really lovely a brilliant mediation on what it means (the self-inflicted drama and letdowns) to be a young artist in NYC today.

Like, Orpheus, the movie really spoke volumes to me. But again, for better or worse (usually worse) it felt like a movie about people that I know and interact with every day. And it's funny as all get out.

it was a girl who wasn't a great dancer so wasn't given much to do within the company she was performing with as an apprentice, but had a teacher who liked her choreography.
there was a roommate girlfriend who basically dumped on her best friend from college to go live in her favorite neighborhood and subsequently marry a guy she was having a lot of fun making fun of beforehand, there was a couple of friend type guys that frances moved in with until she couldn't afford it anymore, and who basically seemed liked they probably would have no problem with her living on the street for all they cared about her situation - one of who liked her
(kinda) went out with someone else for a bit, decided frances was quite nice afterwards and missed his opportunity with her...

there was the kind of stuck up upper class people dance artists etc types she went to the party of and made a fool of herself gushing about sophie to, and then stupidly went to france (huh? wtf was that about?) only to miss out on meeting up with her friend because why was she there anyway?
there was a vignette type set of scenes of her going home for x-mas and being the daughter/family member for a bit only to leave again looking like she'd rather die than go back to NYC, and there was the wholly unsatisfying ending where she gets to work as an admin for the teacher, starts doing some choreography and gets an apartment of her own.

i dunno, man, I'm not unsympathetic to the idea of making it as an artist, and I like indie type films well enough, and I like arsty types well enough too so what am I missing here?

can't wait for the shit storm this bring on for me -

whatever, i guess. I'm fairly intellectual and fairly artistic, and i don't see enough of a differentiation generationally that I'm missing the point of the movie or anything so yeah.

I think it's just a generational divide. Because that's one of the points the movie is making.

I don't think it can just be chalked up to a generational divide; I'm of the younger generation and I'm totally with malice on this one.

I'm sorry if I can't be more helpful. Like Nate said, there are A LOT of people that really disliked the movie, or didn't get anything out of it. So... who knows?

Also, I don't see anything in Frances Ha that Girls didn't already do much better and with a lot more depth and honesty.

Oh yes, that's true. Girls is way better. Absolutely. But that doesn't take away from Frances Ha. There's room for both.

Of course. Different voice. Different story. Different characters. Some variations on themes. Different goals, even if just on a micro level. Absolutely.
