Are bands actually present for the mixing/mastering process?

I've always wondered. They should be, really.

Mixing, most of the time.

Mastering, it depends. Probably not that often.

I would think they can be, if they want. It might depend on how much they care about the process themselves.

I guess it depends. In many cases, the mixing/mastering people are left with instructions/details about the kind of sound the band is after.

The band then listen to the end product, and request tweaks/changes. Repeat until the end product is what they're after, or the record label suits say "that's enough, the deadline for release is here".

It depends a lot on how much say/power/trust the band has in the people doing the mixing/mastering.

Edit: Quite a few years ago I played drums in a band, and we recorded an EP. We did our studio session, and then left the mixing to the engineer. He then gave us a CD of the end product to us to listen to and discuss as a band. We the went back with a list of changes. After he made the changes, we listened again and were happy with the result. We paid him, took our master copy and went to a mastering specialist. Repeat process.

Correct. In pj's situation I imagine they arent in the studio but are getting mixes and giving feedback often. It's their call. Mastering is most likely done independently by the engineer and the guys may request a repass or six until they are happy

Spot on. With my old band's lowly EP, the whole process only took a few days. With bands like PJ, it can take weeks or months.

In some cases, a band may feel that a record is finalised, but then change their mind at the last minute to mix and master it differently. I heard this just occurred with Dead Letter Circus in the last couple of days.

I thought there were only two trusted mastering guys at PJs level. Bob Ludwig and the other guys name escapes me

Guys, looking over those rumoured tracklists, I'm really hoping we don't get a PJ song called 'Jumbled'.

I've just noticed the header over at PJ.com is the original ten font.
Wonder if the name of the new one will have some relation to it?

You're second guess would make a lot of sense, and now I wonder whether the song was made up of rejected lyrics from 'Force of Nature'.

This band has been tacky many, many times over the last several years.

In your opinion. I dot think the band has ever even tacky. Tenclub have been since 06 or so. Not the band though.

I dunno, I thought The Fixer video was tacky.

The crowd noise I couldn't figure out. Other than that I liked the video.

Mimed "live" videos always seem super tacky to me. The crowd noise does make it worse though.

A good thought, but isn't the spelling for the mythological ones spelled Psirens?
