The curse operates on culinary ontology instead of science. So let's say you give up bread. If a normal person would call the thing "bread" (including flatbreads) then it’s bread and you can't eat it, even if it shares a lot in common with cake. Cake is not bread. Noodles are not bread.
Bread can be made from potato too, but if you give up bread and you try to make it out of potates the curse kicks in and it dissolves into inedible mush

Are you suggesting they wouldn't have done just fine if they had potato instead of bread? The only bread I would really miss is cornbread, although it could be argued it’s closer to cake.

I’m saying that 99% of humans survived without potatoes until the 1500s, whereas most cultures have bread or bread-like ingredients as a staple, so bread is more important. Then, a follow-up question: is a tortilla bread? Like, if you give up bread can you still eat tacos?
