Things I learned while running a virtual 50K (10x 5K trail loops) race on Saturday:
-If you're going to run on trails, train on trails. Maybe not 100%, but a lot more than I did. I tweaked my left achilles climbing a sandy section of trail about 6 miles in and spent the next 4 hours adjusting my stride/gate to try to minimize the discomfort. Left heel/ankle are orange-sized today. Train on trails and build those trail muscles, dummy.
-After four 50ks, I still don't know what I'm doing when it comes to race-day nutrition. I felt like I ate/drank nonstop this time and still only consumed half of what most plans recommend. I need to find some calorie rich foods I can eat on the move that don't kill my gut.
-If people want to come out and see you during the race, don't just say "come out whenever." People kept showing up between each loop, which was cool, but I lost 30+ minutes chit chatting, basically adding a minute per mile to my pace.
-Even virtually, the medal and other swag are a good motivator. When I was briefly thinking about quitting because of my foot, the thought of not being able to display the medal/wear the t-shirt I had already received in the mail was one thing that kept me going.
-People who treat trails/nature reserves like off leash dog parks are scum.
-This was the first 50K where I finished feeling like maybe 50 miles isn't completely out of the question. Maybe next year.

Strong work. You're on a level I will never get to. I can imagine long distances on the road, but the trail I just can't wrap my head around. Too much going on with the uneven terrain ect. I just want to zone out.

Was about five feet away from a skunk at the track tonight, back half of first lap. I decided to keep going after making it past him unscathed and it must have decided to leave because on the second lap it was gone.

Goggins would have chased down that skunk and demanded it spray him.

Another 6.5 miles today. Better time. Still hot. Still humid. Still hate running in a mask. But still no injuries. No knee issues.
Good to be back.

Given what I've seen with protests wearing a mask while running is even more of a cuck move than I previously believed.

I don't keep it on the entire time anymore. I did for the first coupe of coming off the injury. But it's just too hot and humid now. But when it's not possible to maintain a good distance, I cover up. Usually, I end my runs at least a mile from home so I can walk for a bit. I like having my mask for the walk, too.

Felt a lot hotter out there today than it was. Legs felt strong enough just didn't have much zip. Even ate a shit load of carbs yesterday.

Do you think it's a coincidence that both you and Goggins are currently injured?

Controlled 5 miles. Kept heart rate down. 25 miles in for the week. Sundays are always so melancholy, especially if I don't make it out until the evening.

I'M BACK. Goggins died so that I may live again.
These Hoka recovery flip flops are like riding on clouds.
