In the US, is it not common practice to leave a tip for the maid when you leave a hotel room? I never gave it a second thought but in the past couple years I’ve encountered several people who travel regularly and acted like they had no idea it was a thing.

Maybe not anymore? Perhaps it's generational, but growing up it was always a standard practice for everyone I knew and/or talked to about it.
