This seems rather irrational.

It drives me crazy when people don't watch the road when driving in movies. Keep your eye on the fucking road! I can't concentrate on the conversation when you are about to veer into oncoming traffic and kill everyone.

"The Babadook" has a lot in common with "The Monster" in that the Evil is toxic parent / child dynamics as much as anything; in both movies the supernatural is kind of just a personification of the ways mother and child aren't coping, and the victory over it happens when their real-life situation improves - cool movies

100% agree the Babdook was the mom's grief which is why you can never get rid of the Babdook. Grief doesn't go away its always there. Trapped in the basement. You learn to cope but you still visit with it from time to time....and feed it worms I guess.

Babadook was good but suffers from the same over-literal metaphor problem as most other “serious” horror movies these days

House of the Devil is still the best horror movie to come out in the last twenty years

that "over-literal metaphor" "problem" goes right back to gods and monsters and creatures in mythology and fairytale, it's what I love about horror; sure I think The Babadook is a bit ham-fisted at times, but I don't think that's a fault of the genre; I mean, the Universal Monsters (TM) were all screamingly obvious metaphors for things, which is why we still use phrases like "emotional vampire", "Jekyll and Hyde" etc. to describe people and qualities we dislike; and then you've got those old zombie tales that originate in like West Africa, where zombies stand for people who have been brainwashed and controlled by the societal powers that be, a slavery story; part of what makes "Get Out" so great is that it falls right into that tradition

Yeah, this is great insight.
A movie metaphor is not better just because I need to read a "Babadook, Explained" article after I watch the movie to understand it

Yes Asher that is exactly what I was saying, that you should have to read a book about movies in order to understand them
