The thing is, he wasn't even comparing Beck to his music, he was comparing it to Beyonce's. C'mon, dude, she doesn't even write most of her own stuff.
Sure, but I was primarily referencing what you said about Beck's musicianship versus Kanye's and the whole issue of whether he the right to call out "respecting artistry" and whatnot.
Never listened to Beyonce, though, so I can't say anything about that comparison.
I just said that because of what he said about Beyonce/Beck. There are plenty of musicians out there that maybe aren't as talented as Beck instrument-wise, but have put out better albums. But don't say the dude doesn't deserve it. I'm sure I'm contradicting myself somewhere here, it just is coming off as a little racist because he thinks the R&B artist was "better" than the white dude playing guitar.

I'm sure Kanye felt that the Grammys' choice of the white dude playing guitar over the R&B album was also a little racist.
Not saying I agree or disagree, mind you.

Yeezus is actually ruining other music for me. The precision, the cohesion of elements, the introspection, the importance of
every second. It's making other music feel trivial.

Also, that performance on the SNL special last night read less "brilliant" and more "I'm trying to show people I can be creative and artistic after I said I had no respect for a guy that plays 12 instruments and I only play the piano"
Umm, 14 instruments

Who gives a shit. None of your favorite artists have made an album as good as In the Wee Small Hours, and Sinatra wrote even less of that album than Beyoncé did hers.

Yeah, this whole writing = artistry thing is pretty specious.

The fetishization of the lone genius multi-instrumentalist is confounding. Brian Wilson can lock himself in a room obsessing over master tapes and come out with a great album. An army of hired songwriters and producers can collaborate with a performer and come up with another. Rockism is fucking insufferable.

One has a better chance of being formulaic though, which doesnt tickle my fancy nearly as much

And I understand that people (at least originally) brought up the "he plays 14 instruments!" thing as a reaction to Kanye's artistry dig. And yeah, I agree that he was out of line with that comment. But it seems that more and more people are latching on to that point and bringing it up as proof of one artist's indisputable superiority. Come on. That's as spurious as Kanye's douchey shade.

Yeah. Kid Rock can play a lot of instruments too, but he still sucks. That's more of a magic trick than artistry. But I think Beck can use his wide range of skills to produce great and diverse music, and his discography proves that out, imo.

The number of instruments thing is meaningless to me, I just brought it up because kanye clearly doesn't respect beck or taylor swift or whoever he is bitching about. It makes it seem as though all he cares about is r&b. And don't say number of albums sold should be a factor, by that logic 50 shades of grey should win best picture. I would just like to know what an artist/musician like beck or swift has to do to get his respect?
