Usually the band brings a lot to the table for any song, no matter who wrote it.

Like Given To Fly was an interesting idea if you heard how Mike first played it, but the band version elevates it a lot. I think often the songwriter has just had the initial idea and general sound to a main part.

I was really confused the first listen, but then from the guitar solo (woah) through the end the song really works. The start of the song is pretty jarring. The chorus I think sounds really good but Ed’s delivery in the verses needs a little time with me. It’s not that it is bad, just unexpected. This song I think will be a real grower, and I too am surprised they chose this for a second single. I give them a lot of credit: 1/6th of the way through this album and it has twice kept me on my toes and off balance. I asked for that and got it in spades.

When that tracklist released, I would not have thought I'd rank a song called Dance of the Clairvoyants over one called Superblood Wolfmoon, but that's where I find myself. I think at this point, I just want to hear the album as a whole and how this all flows together.

As the Facebook denizens decry “I want that grunge sound not this modern stuff!” this song is a success. That any poor unfortunate soul thought they were getting another Once or Deep is ludicrous to begin with. That this is what people are whining about is a good thing.

I think based on song length there were few single candidates on this record unless they wanted to make single edits. Of course, they’ve made plenty of long songs singles in the past so what do I know.

A significant step down from DotC and add choice for a follow up single before the album is even released.

After about six listens, I'll say it's an okay song. I actually enjoy the intro/first verse and the final chorus/verse very much. In fact, I caught my self singing "Superblood Wolfmoon" after only listening to it once this morning. Unfortunately, the rest of the song between these two parts is pretty muddled and messy. Ed is trying to get too many words in and relies too much on the same awkward scream/yell that seemed to take over much of the last two albums. It seems like he'll deliver a line very well, and then the next line is cringeworthy. When they do these punk-styled songs, I wish they would harken back to STBC, Last Exit, and BOJ. They managed to let those songs still "breath" as someone mentioned earlier while maintaining plenty of intensity. Over the past 15 years, or whatever, it's like they want to cram as much as possible into these type of songs for the sake of making sure it sounds punkish.

I think the title and Ed singing those words are the worst part of an otherwise very good modern Pearl Jam song.

If they make it a few minutes longer, it could work out really well. But need lots of guitars and melody.

Personally, I pretty much always enjoy live PJ over the studio recording. I imagine that is because I became a fan by mostly listening to boots back around 2000. I wouldn't say that leaves me optimistic with one, but maybe at least hopeful.

I just listened again. I think what I hate about it is the vocals. The music is fine, nothing spectacular, but a decent groove. But the delivery Ed has in this one is just... awful. I hate it. I'll probably listen to this again when the album comes out to hear the flow, but that is about it.

Sad Ruddock is sad today.
