The other reporters applauding Trump while he's trying to shut down the NBC guy calling his orginisation 'fake news' was depressing.

So we're to take it anyone that challenges him is fake news now?

Those weren't other reporters that were applauding. They were members of Trump's staff.

Of course. How could it be otherwise?

Yeah, this is already being widely reported: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/t ... ng-section

It was CNN, btw, the ones who broke the story about the memo last night, not NBC. We discussed this between peen jokes last night, but it's important to emphasize that CNN did not publish, read from, or really even openly discuss the contents of the memo last night or into today--they simply reported its existence and that intelligence agencies were trying to verify it. As Trump railed against "fake news," he seemed to be implying that they were, while it was Buzzfeed who shared it. And even calling that "fake news" is fucking laughable--as I went into a few pages ago, there's a huge difference between biased reporting, "fake news," and irresponsible journalism, but Trump obviously is happy to lump them all together.

(CNN)CNN's decision to publish carefully sourced reporting about the operations of our government is vastly different than Buzzfeed's decision to publish unsubstantiated memos. The Trump team knows this. They are using Buzzfeed's decision to deflect from CNN's reporting, which has been matched by the other major news organizations.

We are fully confident in our reporting. It represents the core of what the First Amendment protects, informing the people of the inner workings of their government; in this case, briefing materials prepared for President Obama and President-elect Trump last week.
We made it clear that we were not publishing any of the details of the 35-page document because we have not corroborated the report's allegations. Given that members of the Trump transition team have so vocally criticized our reporting, we encourage them to identify, specifically, what they believe to be inaccurate.

While it doesn't appear rise to 'fake news' (i.e. entirely fabricated to drive particular opinion), it's probably beyond 'irresponsible' given then nature of the allegations. It might even rise to the level of slander given Buzzfeed's past and that every other major organization decided to pass on the details.

It's not slander because it's written. It's not libel because you can't prove Buzzfeed knew that it was false.

As long as they're reporting AGAINST HIM.That's a very important distinction.

It's ok for journalists/news organizations to have an opinion. It's even better when they're open and honest about them, instead of trying to pretend they don't.

Which respected US media outlet of note can (or will) hold his feet to the fire and do it consistently so that people will listen and take it seriously, and that he won't be able to cry 'fake news'?

Agreed. Also, provided journalists are accurate in their reporting and are able to prove so within reason, I think if someone is unable or unwilling to listen to them because of their political opinions that's more on the person doing the listening.

It's also good to be aware that news from an organization that breaks into an orgy of tears over the president leaving should probably be taken with a truckload of salt.
