I saw Matt do a drummers workshop in 94? And it was jaw dropping. He is a really good top notch drummer. But again I will say that he is not the perfect fit for PJ (IMHO).

Additionally, I would say that (from a drummers perspective), Jeff and Stone don't shine as much with Matt behind the kit (compared in a live environment with Dave A or with Jack).

I think that in general, the rhythm section was what most of this band was... plus Ed, obviously. The rhythm section being Dave, Jeff and Stone. Now that isn't quite as strong, or forceful, or doesn't drive the songs as much, your new 'focal points' are Ed and Mike (whether you like that or not). But in retrospect, how's that for democratic? I guess they've all had their day in the sun.

We're on the same page, Harmless. It is amazing, as you say. Also, Matt has been more precise and dare I say have more aggression since SG reformed. I believe his chops are better now and he is more match fit. But even that goes hand in hand with Jeff playing live more with RNDM.

Yep. So whatever you want to say about the side projects, they've been good news (and probably necessary) for the continuing enthusiasm and creativity of the rhythm section. Including Stone, come to think of it. Now he just needs to become more prominent in the mix.

we'll see how the playing on the record is. We can probably read something out of how MYM is mixed/mastered, but neither MYM (which was written and executed to be a certain type of punk song) or future days are probably designed to be showcase pieces.

Yeah, but this is the thing, isn't it: there were so many songs by PJ, way back when, that weren't designed to be 'showcase pieces' either. But Dave A, and also Jack, transformed those songs by their inventiveness. Songs like 'Black' (not a 'showcase piece' by design), and so many others I don't need to name, were totally lifted from being quite a plain and unremarkable ballad by the drummer (OK, the studio version was Krusen but you get my point.) I don't like the fact that Matt often relies on the 'type of song' to define what he does with it. Not only that, but he sometimes gets it wrong ('Speed of Sound'). Dave A did far more on the drums than the song required. Some people hate that; I think those people are crazy.

Having said that, as you say, MYM *is* mostly a typical punk song by design, so I take some consolation from that fact. A lot of punk bands keep their drumming simple so I can forgive it.
