I think the thing with Weird Al is that for so many people (certainly myself) he was a gateway into so much. He's an easy guy to love when you're first starting out (his best stuff is still very good, but everything seemed brilliant when you're 8-13) and he gave you an easy window into almost everything.

Smells Like Nirvana was my introduction to grunge, after all.

It's probably because I come from a different place/culture but I don't even understand how Weird Al could be considered an artist/band, let alone be someone's favorite band, even when they were 5.
