The new Meshuggah is immense, relentless, and dense. I feel like it's going to take me months to absorb the melodies and structures of these songs.

I feel the same way. I'm trying not to over saturate myself and burn out on this one. I love that they recorded it live this time around. It really shows in the way the songs feel.

Okay, help me get into Opeth, RM. Where to start? Does their sound change distinctly during different periods?

Some brief YouTube searching has lead me to believe I will enjoy their newer, rock-ish stuff more than their metal stuff, so I think I'm gonna check out Sorceress and Damnation first. Then probably Deliverance, despite not really liking the weak harsh vocals.

I first got into Opeth about 5 years ago.

Everything up through Watershed has harsh vocals.

I would start with Heritage, it is where their sound changed dramatically. Listened to Pale Communion and Sorceress a couple of times, couldn't get into them.

Blackwater Park is their absolute peak - the song The Drapery Falls from this is probably a good starting point for the harsh/melodic mix.

Damnation is also a masterpiece.

Ghost Reveries is quite good.

Watershed is decent.

Haven't been able to get into Deliverance.

Haven't checked out anything before Blackwater Park

I'm not loving them so far. I listened to Blackwater Park in high school and didn't like it, but I remember nothing about it. Now I'm remembering why I didn't like them.

The Judas priest thread got me thinking. I saw a ton of metal bands in concert with my dad, all before I was 18.

Metallica opened for Ozzy
Judas priest
Cinderella
AC/DC (multiple)
Ratt
Iron Maiden
Stryper (lol)
LA Guns
Megadeath

Judas Priest/Dokken
Iron Maiden/Vinnie Vincent
Motley Crue/Whitesnake/Poison
Stryper
Scorpions/Ratt/Y & T/Metallica/Yngwie Malmsteen
Aerosmith/Dokken
Ratt/Poison

Then it circled around and I took him to see:
Judas Priest/Motorhead/Testament
Judas Priest/Heaven & Hell/Testament
Metallica
Scorpions/Tesla
Ozzy Osbourne

I remember thinking my Dad was too old to go to "metal" shows. He was 42-44 when he took me. Now I'm 46 and going to way heavier shows than those.

This album is fucking awesome. It's rare for me to find death metal I like this much.

Metal has never been my thing, but I have a friend who is a diehard. We went to see Amon Amarth last night. That kind of shit makes me laugh. I'm going to see Iron Maiden with him in June. Here are my metal(some hair) shows I remember going to.

1) Pantera with Machinehead and Coal Chamber. Amazing!
2) Metallica
3) Motley Crue with Alice Cooper
4) Judas Priest with Twisted Sister and Tesla
5) Poison and Ratt
6) Motörhead
7) Lizzy Borden
8) King Diamond with Behemoth, Nike, and Black Dahlia Murder
9) Def Leppard
10) Bon Jovi
11) Van Haggar

I think the only big void is Ozzy/Sabbath considering how many opportunities there were. I guess GnR, too, but I don't think seeing them now would be too satisfying.
