Agreed. Love the instrumentation, and particularly the Jim O'Rourke-produced stuff. But her voice, and her whole "deal," just annoy the shit out of me.
Yeah. I'll listen to her whenever I'm in the mood for some Gaelic elvish female vocals.

Huh. I would have pegged ol' 'snatcher for a Joanna Newsome guy.

ABNorman is the only other fan here that I'm aware of.
And not trying to convince you guys about Joanna (if you don't like her voice there's not much to do about it) but there's a lot more to her than elvish harp girl singing about Bears in a strange childlike voice.
A lot of songs on Have One On Me especially are pretty straightforward (but excellent) singer songwriter songs. Her singing is also really toned down on that record compared to The Milk-Eyed Mender and Ys. (Man, I understand not liking her voice but personally it's one of my favorite voices in the world)
I just want someone to listen to Divers and love it as much as me! (Well, I could just go to RateYourMusic for that)

Does Not Suffice is a beautiful song.

I saw Newsom open for Will Oldham in 2004, at a hookah bar in Champaign, IL right around the time "Milk-Eyed Mender" came out. It was one of the most utterly transfixing performances I've ever seen, particularly considering I'd never heard of her prior to the show -- a harp in a tiny room with great acoustics is really one of the most beautiful sounds on planet earth. I listened obsessively to her first album that whole summer, and I still love it.
"Ys" exceeded my thresholds; it is a masterfully written album, but it's just more than I can process. I lost track of her after that. Perhaps this would be a good place to catch up.

I don't need to get angry anymore!
That concert sounds like my dream concert. (14 year old me probably wouldn't have appreciated it, though) The Milk-Eyed Mender really is a great album and Divers might just be the right album to get back into Joanna if you're a big fan of that one. Not as hard to process as Ys and not two hours long like Have One On Me.

I know, I know, don't judge a book on its cover, but c'mon, no way this could be good.

I'm just now having my first listen-through of Divers. Waltz of the 101st Lightborne is blowing my mind.
Newsom buddies, Mike.
I got to see her at Somerset House in London in 2008 and I was awestruck. Seeing her again in a coupla weeks.
This is the most excited I've been about an album for a while.

I loved Ys when it came out. I haven't been following her since, though.

The Joanna Album is magical and as incredible as expected. I urge everyone here to listen to it. This is something special.
Majorette made a big impact on me right away. The rest is still sinking in.

The capitalization of Bears makes it sound like she is singing about the NFL team. That would sell me too.
