Agreed. This quote below speaks volumes about how ho-hum and bland they perceive the whole process:
igotworms wrote:Stone:
"...everyone takes their demos that they’ve been working on for the last, whatever, two or three years, and shows up at the studio....and then those go and sit in the closet for six months. Everybody listens to them and goes “Oh, that’s my favorite.” “I don’t like that one.” “That one could be better.” “I wish I could re-do this one.” We have another studio session, and we either go back in and do some new stuff, or we re-do a couple of things, things, and pretty soon Brendan is like, “OK, let’s do it,” and...It’s a normal process."
Blah blah blah...
In other words . Stone is saying:
"We don't really give much shit about the whole thing. We spread it out over many months and years, because we don't like it. But we know we have to do it, so we just take the most normal, easy approach we can think of. Then Brendan finishes everything so we don't have to"
We got the same basic response from Ed in one of the LB interviews when he talked about how glad he was to finally get all the lyrics written. It was like some work task that he had to get through to earn his paycheck.

To achieve this, all they have to do is record everything themselves as demos without a producer.
The thing that confuses me about BO'B is that Vitalogy and No Code are rough and ready. They sound like they captured a moment in time. Even Yield has a nice organic feel to it. So when did he turn into the Phil Spector of rock? It's crazy how over-produced and glossy the last two albums have been.

We're really excited about this record. It's probably our best yet.
We're so into it that we only left it in a closet for five months, just because we couldn't wait.

Stone described writing his solo records in a similar way for what is worth.

There are probably like 6 people on this whole planet who care less about Neil young than I do
First off, there's no way that's true. I bet you care about Neil Young a lot more than these guys -
Secondly, thanks for sharing such a worthless piece of information that has no bearing on any of the discussion being held. I just wanted to applaud you for that.

3 of the 6 people are actually in that picture.
You're welcome. My apparently too subtle point was that I have very little interest in pearl jam trying to sound like or emulate neil young.

Yes, that certainly was too subtle a point for dull old me to catch.
I think the point with the previous Neil Young reference was to suggest a willingness to consider new approaches, sounds, arrangements, etc..., even if they ultimately fail. The point was not necessariliy that Pearl Jam should sound like Neil Young or emulate/imitate his arrangements.

I honestly thought McP was saying that Pearl Jam SHOULD walk with him.

At this point, they are so far away from a band that I would like, offering pointers is just polishing the brass on the Titanic. After it hit the bottom of the ocean.

You always want to make sure your brass is polished. You never know who is going to stop by. Like wearing clean underwear

Listen to EdVed solo album instead. Personally i'm pretty sick of all Ed's solo efforts via band. A bunch of Vedders songs could've been easily saved for his solo work.
I didn't like his solo album, since it was just Eddie and a ukulele. I really liked the Lightning Bolt version of Sleeping by Myself with the full band and harmonies. I thought Eddie sounded his best on that (And infallible for some reason.)
The thing is I feel like Eddie's trying to do things his voice just can't anymore, and the result sucks. Why not just do something he's good at and settle for making great music in that style? His voice just lost its pleasant quality somehow on all of the bigger songs.

How about Into the Wild? ITW was pretty sweet.
