This is not what I was expecting

Finished Season 3 last night. I enjoyed it more as it moved along. Really got into the low-key critique of crass commercialism this season. That last episode seemed to have several recreations of popular 80s movie scenes, too, whether intentional or not.
Spoiler: show
Billy in the mall parking lot reminded me of the Libyans in BTTT. Fight between Hopper and Grigori looked like a climactic Star Wars scene, etc.

Agreed though
Spoiler: show
I thought the Hopper fight was basically straight out of Terminator. There was also the fun house mirror episode--I can't name which movie that's from but it feels very 80s.

It's insane to me that there's a reactionary sentiment on Twitter that ST is just participating in more red-bashing anti-communist stuff when it's really--I thought, anyway--serving up a pretty big satire of this genre. I mean, one of the characters name-checks Red Dawn...

Yeah, I thought the season bashed Reagan's 80s and capitalism in general more than anything. To that point:
Spoiler: show
Alexei's carnival scene and Murray's speech about everything being rigged felt like something out of The Wire. Devastating

Speaking of that character,
Spoiler: show
The only thing more embarrassing than a spontaneous break-out into song during an otherwise intense and well done episode was the fact that I didn't know what the song was from.

You're nuts. That was the single best moment/scene of the entire season and a contender for the best of the series. You should 100% absolutely be ashamed of yourself for not recognizing the song, though.

Robin and Erica were both great adds, though. Totally agree with you there.
