Why is it impossible for non government entities to visit Antarctica? What don't they want us to see?

To land and go inland requires a permit that's never been issued. Only government entities can be based there.

Each year over 70,000 tourists visit Antarctica by sea and air. When traveling to Antarctica, most visitors only access areas along the Antarctic Peninsula that are close to the shore. In addition, some tourists take flights to the South Pole, which is considered a bucket list item for the most intrepid travelers.

Yes I'm sure they have a little tourist area carved out, complete with a "South pole", so dumbass tourists can get their picture taken for their Instagrams. But you'll get shot if you stray too far.

Yes let’s let tourists wander out into a freezing, barren wasteland with no infrastructure. Occam’s razor.

My bad, they issue waste removal permits to those operating in areas adjacent to the Specially Protected Areas. As far as I can tell, the Special Access Permits to actually visit the Specially Protected Areas are issued to defense contractors and state entities.
