I can see the rationale for closing the discussion as a means to stifle the distribution, but threatening to revoke 10c membership if you talk about it is pretty lame.

I've already revoked my own 10c membership, so joke's on you, 10c!

Pearl Jam sucks now.

Pearl Jam have always been lame about stuff like this. They very quickly forgot what it means to be a fan.

Yeah, RM is a privilege not a right.

That said, I think most folks here are aware of the PJ fan caste system (if you aren't, guess what) where this type of content and more is discussed and exchanged through invite only channels. I'm not suggesting anyone here participates, I don't so I wouldn't know who does, the mods just gotta expect some level of jealous reaction from the out crowd as this is where most of us get our 'serious collector' stuff.
I don't pick up jealousy from any of the reactions here -- I am going to venture out on a limb and assume that most of RM is happy to be at a distance from any kind of "inner collectors' circle" (sounds like hell to me personally -- in my experience, the closer you get to that sort of thing in any fan community, the more insufferable the people become), and are just bummed that this new thing that they're excited about isn't open for discussion anymore. Those moments of collective excitement when "new" material (official or un-) becomes available, where some level of blinding enthusiasm is overriding the impulse to be critical, are among the most fun opportunities for fans to connect with each other, and to reconnect with what it is they love about being fans of the band.

Any band who is lucky enough to have fans at this level has to understand that this sway works overwhelmingly in their favor, financially and otherwise -- the same enthusiasm that drives a fan to click on a MEGA link and jump into a discussion about its contents is the same enthusiasm that drives a fan to fight with robots for the opportunity to pay $500 apiece for concert tickets, to buy useless merchandise, and to tell their friends how totally awesome this band is and how they too should buy $500 concert tickets and useless merchandise.

All that said, the band are still artists, and they still care about how their work is consumed and received. I've done enough creative work in my life to know that works in progress, unfinished drafts, etc., are vulnerable -- to not want things like that out there for all to see, or be discussed openly, feels reasonably human to me. Even if the reasons are purely commercial -- i.e. they are preparing a release and want to control the rollout for it -- I respect that too, even though I think they have to be aware that anyone interested in these tracks as contraband will be among the first in line to lap them up as official product. (Though to be fair, in a streaming economy, where royalties are paid out per play, it would stand to reason that they might have some anxiety about a scenario where people are getting a lot of their 'discovery plays' in outside of the official channel, and that that might cut into profits in a way that it wouldn't when the only way to get the official product was to buy a CD.)

Scrubbing discussion, as well as killing public links, limits the amount of available information, reduces the likelihood that someone who stumbles upon the discussion in 2-3 weeks feels invited to PM someone participating in said discussion and request a link, etc. It seems draconian but I think it ultimately serves to protect the same interest, whatever that interest is.

Overwhelmingly, I think the band have been pretty cool about stuff like this throughout the course of their career. It feels like they're being heavy-handed here but truthfully they very rarely meddle in our affairs, and RM management do so even more rarely. I visit and have visited other forums where this is very much not the case. When some exception arises, I am happy to defer to:

I just put extra security measures in place on my laptop so all the fans of my band can't get at all of my amazing unfinished work!

Im still excited to talk about Dark Matter though, so...all is good.

I want RM to persist, I don't know where else to go, this is muscle memory. And I'm scared.

I think back over everything we've heard from outside of commercial releases and what gifts those have been to us as fans during the long stretches between albums. And, frankly, one of the big reasons PJ is who they are today is because of the "kiss the stone" / Hallucinogenic Recipe bootleg era and the new music/demos/etc. so many of those CDs contained. Bad Radio... the TOTD demos... Dave A tape demos... the alternate mixes of Binaural songs... so much incredible music most of us would never had heard if not for the willingness of folks here to share it.

I agree the right thing is to respect the artist's decision and what Stip and B are doing. That's absolutely the right thing and KD's explanation rings true. Just a bit sad that it may finally be ending.
