Boy, did I love that book.
I like it so far. Wolf in the White Van would be hard to top.
I think Wolf is ultimately better. But I prefer Harvester. I'll just leave it there until you've finished it.

I've read the Fagles translation and the Emily Wilson translation and liked the Wilson a lot. Fagles wins the first line, though:
"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns"
vs Wilson's:
"Tell me about a complicated man."
There's millennia of commentary on that line, and I really think Wilson swung and missed there in every way. But from there on out, it's a good read.
I'd like to read some of the earlier translations, too, someday.

I just picked this up from the library the other day and opening to the first page to set my bookmark there is a post-it note that reads: “this is a stupid book that wanders & never goes anywhere. Don’t waste your time”
Now I don’t know what to do.

I like the idea, but the execution could be better.

Should be called Harrogate and be about nothing but the exploits of the biggest and funniest dumb shit in fiction. Great book, though.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Parts, yes. It’s been too long for me to remember details.

Child of God is a really quick read, you could motor through it in an afternoon. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, exactly, but it's classic McCarthy if you want to be a completionist.

I can’t read anything in an afternoon, but thank you for your encouragement.
