A recent pet peeve of mine for this election is that the media narrative regarding the generational battle is the typically lazy Boomer v. Millennial, with Xers (as usual) lost in the mix. This article is one example, but in actually filling in the division lines from the image in that article, while Boomers aren't blameless, the generation that's really to blame for Trump are the Silents.

This steep climb on X is interesting. It might be informative to see that matched against income and education.

I wonder how it compares against other common assumptions... are Gen X trump supporters uneducated deplorables? Are they wealthy and looking to vote in their economic self-interest? Do they live in areas with lots of lead and asbestos? (my best guess)

It is not at all fair to blame the Silents for Trump. The youngest of them are in their seventies, so many of them are already dead and (compared to Boomers and Milennials) there weren't that many of them in the first place. Trump is the fault of the Boomers.

I feel like trump might actually be Gen X's fault.

I'm pretty certain Trump is just a result of our culture's continual moving away from the literate, reflective insight that is a base requirement for democracy.

A national culture built on titillating gossip, gleeful celebrity judgements, 30-second factoid news items, past glories-worshipping media, and the logic that you measure your intelligence by either how hard you root for "your team" or how you never believe anybody cannot, and will not, ever produce a society that is also capable of sustained democracy.
