Not sure how I feel about this, honestly. I think this would take a long conversation to really break down. But I doubt RM is the forum for such a discussion.

I'm the same way - I like the religious/mystical elements because they speak to a very real set of human longing, and because it is fiction you don't have to confront the fact that it's nothing but a longing

There are plenty of ways midi-chlorians could've been introduced in the prequels to make them more interesting. Maybe half of the Jedi council believes that that's where Force-attunement comes from, and the other thinks it's just a coincidence/over-thinking? (I'm basically stealing this idea from a book called The Intuitionist, which is about elevator repair.) That'd build some tension between some really flat characters (Qui-gon and Yoda, really) and help bring that idea of doubt back. But that'd take some really sharp, interesting writing, and I don't think Lucas was up for it.

It is established early on that some people are more sensitive to the force than others, and not due to training - that there is something innate about certain people (or bloodlines) that makes them able to use the force. Midichlorines just gives it a name.

The name wasn't necessary (no one ever asked the question 'where did the force come from?') nor did they do anything interesting with it. The reveal was anti climactic and took away far more than it added. Maybe Lucas felt that this was necessary to give anakin his immaculate conception, but hat doesn't go anywhere intersting (and can't really, since the prophecy never makes sense). I agree 100% that the whole premise is terrible as it plays out. I can just imagine a world where more interesting things are done with it

I don't know. I don't really care. I don't want to think about it. I just want to watch the fucking movie. I hate the new trailer because who gives a shit? The movie is the movie. Just fucking let people watch it. There's no need to build up anything else any further at this point.

But, no. I believe Kylo Ren is an earned name, not a birth name. I believe he's someone else. And I believe Luke's role will be massive (not his screen time necessarily, but his role) and that's why he's not in the trailers much.

I think the old rumors from a year ago make more sense.
