Oh, I forgot about all the cops that were lit on fire by the molotov cocktails.

Sounds a lot more insurrection-y than terrorist-y.
I'll allow it.

Same thing, just different objectives.

25 is a big stretch.

What’s this about letting children vote earlier and earlier?

Brain not developed yet …. Yada yada … what do these people have to say about other big life decisions and teenagers’ ability to fully understand them?

I don't know if it's a brain development thing, seeing as how 99.9999% of children (18 and under) don't commit any murders.

Are they still charged with murder? I assume we're not just letting people off.

Felony murder is not the same as capital murder:
The Case of Felony Murder: Three Defendants Convicted in the Killing of Ahmaud Arbery

In pursuit of an alleged citizens' arrest, Travis McMichael, along with his father Gregory McMichael and their neighbor William "Roddie" Bryan, Jr., chased and gunned down Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed Black man jogging through a Georgia neighborhood in 2020. Although it was Travis McMichael who pulled the trigger and killed Arbery, a jury found all three defendants guilty of felony murder. The underlying felonies included aggravated assault and false imprisonment.
It’s a common prosecution choice in gang related crime

Under Maryland law, the charge is treated as first-degree murder, with a potential penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Thinking about this a bit more, and that actually does not explain the rationale behind the law (25 year olds get magic exemption) or even provide a reason to eliminate it. Just change it to so that the accomplices cannot be charged with anything greater the the killer themselves. If your felonious actions directly result in the death of an innocent, you are responsible for that death.

Wouldn't that be murder 2 or manslaughter? If your actions inadvertently resulted in someone's death, you obviously should be held responsible, but aren't we just debating what it's called and how harsh the sentence is?

Sort of? I was wrong and McP was correct that Maryland's law allows a murder one charge even in a clearly not murder one situation via the current felony murder law. That is unjust and the law should be modified to remove that particular provision regardless of the age of the accused.

The new proposed law is likely a result of this: https://thedailyrecord.com/2022/06/09/m ... ers-death/

This part is appropriate:
In its 7-0 decision Wednesday, the Court of Appeals rejected Dawnta Harris’ argument through counsel that his conviction for killing officer Amy Caprio on May 21, 2018, must be overturned because unintended killings by motor vehicle cannot be the basis of a murder conviction under Maryland law.

The court agreed that Maryland’s “manslaughter by vehicle” statute governs unintended homicides but said felony murder is legally regarded as an intentional killing not covered by the vehicle law. Under the felony murder doctrine, Harris’ intention to commit the underlying felony – in this case first-degree burglary – was essentially “transferred” to an intent to commit the killing that followed, the court said.
This part is not:
Harris’ three accomplices pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder and were each sentenced to life in prison with all but 30 years suspended. They are Darrell J. Ward, Derrick E. Matthews and Eugene R. Genius IV.

The law should be modified to allow the first case and prevent the second. That is not what the bill says.
