i had the same opinion when the first one came out, thought it looked awful...but years later i gave it a watch and enjoyed it, to my surprise

Huh? It definitely was an attempted reboot. In that continuity, there were no "Ghostbusters" before the all-female crew -- the press comes up with that name for them

I'm saying it depends on which marketing person was talking on which day. Sometimes they called it one, sometimes they called it a sequel, sometimes they called it a spiritual sequel, sometimes they called it something that exists on its own.
All were said, not all were true.
