also, key for me as I unpack a song, Im starting to identify moments I want to talk about later, which I didn’t necessarily have last night

I need to digest this song for a bit. My first impression after three listens is very positive but I'm not sure yet if the reason for that is the actual quality of the song. I need the excitement that the song is a total left turn and has none of the typical faults of the last two Pearl Jam albums to wear off before I can make a level headed judgement.

This is 100x more interesting as a lead single than MYM, Fixer, etc...honestly takes me back to hearing Who You Are or Nothing As It Seems for the first time. This one's real good!!

It's a very different song, but the atmospheric, layered vocals in the outro kind of reminds me of W.M.A

I dont know but this really works, and sounds so much more natural for ed at this stage. If some of lightning bolt had these layers it could have made a difference

This was something I was curious about when we learned that more of this album would have longer run times.

After innumerable listens since 5am: I like it.

Some lyric choices are predictable (McP wrote this song as a joke, ffs), but overall it's a welcomed turn away from ground they've already covered. I'm interested to see how it fits with the rest of the album and to learn more of these recording sessions.

good call.

Ed's voice is a bit jarring (not in a great way), for the first verse, then he settles in and it mostly works. His current voice still leaves me a bit bummed, but at least he's not straining here.

I really dig the music and production. Really nice groove. Wish the end had a little Mike flourish or something. It may get a bit repetitive the more I hear the song.

Love that they took a chance with this single and hope the rest of the album gives us some good surprises.

Overall score (out of 5): 4 dicks (and pricks)

so woke up with "stand back when the spirit comes" in my head and couldn't be happier.

A lot of the popular music these days seems to be in this dancy, upbeat, positive style. Many older bands, especially acts of Pearl Jam's ilk, have pivoted to music like this in an apparent effort to derive additional revenue from car commercials; this song should play well live during summer festival season.

Within the context of Pearl Jam, a welcome development. Commend them for expanding the palate, and dig the groove.

Don't want to hop wholeheartedly onto the accelerating hype train just yet, though. Yes, the delivery sounds a bit like Talking Heads, but, putting a danceable rhythm with some funky, choppy guitar is a bit de rigueur these days.

Wife and I have just come from seeing David Byrne on Broadway this past Sunday (unlike anything I've ever seen live), and it occurs to me that Taking Heads pulled truly disparate, and (at the time) exotic threads to weave wholly new, innovative creations, with David Byrne continuing such boundless exploration to this very day.

I realize the level of groundbreaking gene-splicing that Talking Heads engaged in during the 70s and 80s is almost impossible to experience again in 2020, but, IMO, this is a good song in the context of Pearl Jam's journey; let's cool it a bit beyond that. This isn't Talking Heads, it's merely a good facsimile of such experimentation.

Loving this track, it’s got some Arcade Fire vibes to it. Musically it’s more interesting than anything they’ve done since Avocado and Lyrically Eddie is spitting hot fire while staying in his lane. Can’t wait to hear more, I kinda think Gigaton might be a concept album.

I was never a big talking heads fan (though I like some of their stuff a lot), and sounding like the talking heads isn't in itself what makes a song successful, since the talking heads are not the standard by which all music is judged.

What is interesting about this sounding like talking heads is that it speaks to an interest the band has in trying a different direction and incorporating new elements into a familiar template (and it is an exciting influence).

Not bad. Semi-cringed when Ed started singing, but his vocals are mostly pretty decent throughout. I like the last two minutes or so quite a bit. Definitely glad that they're trying new stuff.

In terms of trying new stuff, I kinda feel like this is PJ trying anal.
