Or, and hear me out here, this style of song isn't my thing? Being open-minded has nothing to do with it. If it sounds crappy to someone, they can't just say "oh, but I should be more open minded. There we go, NOW I LIKE IT".
Come on. It is ok to be critical of music, even if it is your favorite band.

In fact, I caught my self singing "Superblood Wolfmoon" after only listening to it once this morning. Unfortunately, the rest of the song between these two parts is pretty muddled and messy. Ed is trying to get too many words in and relies too much on the same awkward scream/yell that seemed to take over much of the last two albums. It seems like he'll deliver a line very well, and then the next line is cringeworthy. When they do these punk-styled songs, I wish they would harken back to STBC, Last Exit, and BOJ. They managed to let those songs still "breath" as someone mentioned earlier while maintaining plenty of intensity. Over the past 15 years, or whatever, it's like they want to cram as much as possible into these type of songs for the sake of making sure it sounds punkish.
Sorry if this is self-evident but I think Ed prefers this style of singing (lot's of words, scream/yell thing) is it puts less emphasis on this vocal abilities. I feel like if he had more confidence he can take a driving/fast paced song and really sing it (Like corduroy or RVM) he would. A song with more space may require more of a singer. Does this seem like it could be the case?
i dont think the vocals are as bad as everyone here. its not classic EV, but i dont find it to be that clumsy. maybe i just like the rhythm to it. however, if they speed this up live eddie might have a hard time keeping up. the solo is kick ass. i think i like DOTC more, but time will tell.

Personally, I pretty much always enjoy live PJ over the studio recording. I imagine that is because I became a fan by mostly listening to boots back around 2000. I wouldn't say that leaves me optimistic with one, but maybe at least hopeful.
I used to take live versions in to consideration when judging a song but I haven’t really enjoyed the sound of their official bootlegs since 06, I really loved the shows I attended in 09, but the recordings don’t hold up.
I haven’t listened to many shows from the last 10 years but I think somethings been lost in the tempo and sound dynamics to the point where im not that Interested in live recordings of new material anymore. It’s a bit sad because it’s a big reason I got obsessed with pj to begin with

It is really just the vocals that are bothering me. But they really bother me.
i like his performance here. I think this is one if the more successful version of this song they’ve done yet (and there have been attempts. Ole, Supersonic, leatherman, hitchhiker come to mind. If you extend the ven diagram out to include your all nights, black red yellows, johnny guitars, and get rights it is a little less successful). I just wish they’d stop trying to perfect this type. It puts a ceiling on how good it could be.

I tend to like this quick-fire wordiness in a lot of songs (I'm still an Alanis fan); my problem hasn't been delivery as much as embarrassing lyrics that this approach was covering up ("supersonic gonna took my soul / I caught a rabbit but the clock was slow yeah", or whatever that is); I'm not cringing through these lyrics so the delivery is fine, and (I think) delivered with more passion and humour than on BS or LB
I think there is more space in the vocal on DOTC, so I'm sure there will be more of that on the album
I was pretty sure on 1 listen on phone speakers when i should have been asleep, that i liked it. About 6 times through in my car i still feel like its getting better every time through. I actually like the vocal delivery a lot, i feel like thats the main part getting stuck in my head. Of course i love 99% of PJ songs so its not unexpected that i would like this, i was one of the very few that can enjoy CDM, and think Evacuation if very good fun is not what i hope for in the lead up to new PJ but im not upset that this one is fun

agreed; I think we've seen the best and the worst of these songs, and none of them rank as PJ classics

Oh, that's a very good possibility. After DOTC, though, I feel like he still has the abilities to pull off some solid vocals. As a result, I feel he could have taken a step back and been more deliberate with his delivery, and it could have worked out much better.
Listen to it with headphones. Listen to it in the spirit it is in I guess. I didn't like it at all on first listen but have played it a few times this morning on headphones and am enjoying the pace of it. Even the solo sounds better on headphones.
Personally? I don't think this will be a top listen for me off the album but I do appreciate what I think they are trying to do. Have a fun, loose, punk (ish) song that doesn't rip his throat apart. They are an exact 2-2 out of the gate in surprising me and I'll take that any day at this stage of my almost 30 year PJ journey.

that might be the big difference. just about every song on my list above has shit lyrics. this seems pretty smartly written
