I don't even understand what's being ranked. Every thread is just lists of random songs with no context.

the corresponding track number on each album; so for WES, you'd rank all the track 1's

Never understood ranking in any way whatsoever.

Why nail something down that’ll fly loose next time you think about it ?

I guess for some people it won't, but those are some weird people lol

I love ranking things even if I know my rankings will change with time. That’s half the fun for me. I like to compare my different rankings from different times and see what stays mostly consistent and what fluctuates more with my moods. I just find the whole exercise enjoyable and at least moderately interesting for those reasons. And I usually do these rankings while I’m smoking a bowl or two and sitting in front of my speakers listening to the songs I’m ranking. That’s always a good time. Plus, someday I know I will find the perfect rankings to my eyes, everything in its right place, and a portal to another dimension will be unlocked. So, I have that going for me, which is nice.

The debates that follow rankings are fun too.

I love this song but I could really take or leave the chorus. Im not sure there is another PJ song I like this much when Im this lukewarm on the chorus

It's just a fun way to kill some time and think about each of these songs in a specific context. I don't think many (any?) of us are pretending that these won't change. It's just a fun little snapshot in time. And seeing other people's lists encourages discussion and engagement from a different angle. But if it's not for you, it's not for you.

As the poet once said, "It's easy not to." Y'know?

this song hit different today, in the light of how this lockdown and social distancing from my partner is making me feel

It's crazy bizarre to me how prescient this album ended up being. Like they had no idea what was coming but... holy shit.

yes totally, it's really of the moment

And in a purely accidental (?) way? Or a purely psychic way? I don't know what the correct word is. But like Riot Act was a direct response to events. It's of a moment because it was a direct response to a moment. This album was written, recorded, and nailed down prior to the moment it'll will end up defining. Just bananas.

Simultaneously, amazing and awful. What a terrible thing, what a beautiful thing.

also, it's really weird that the fact they recorded it (mostly) remotely and "socially distant", adds to this "accidental" premise and makes the approach totally contemporary, where a couple of years ago it might have felt like an embarrassment, a band uninterested; the world has changed so much since this virus, that I don't think I'd be mad if they followed this recording template in future

I've actually been having some trouble with Who Ever Said. Last 3 albums they knocked my head off especially with Life Wasted and Getaway. Those songs are primo PJ openers not to be fucked with IMO. The band taking no prisoners and driving their point immediately through the wall. Extremely grateful they exist. WES is challenging me, which is what it's supposed to do, I think. If it tore my head off like the others my expectations for the rest of the album would be different, and not in a good way. It's a rocker that wanders and veers off track and has lyrics that are a mouthful. Not what Life Wasted, Gonna See my Friend, and Getaway were, which just oozed unrelenting power. WES ... relents ... on purpose. So, this one is an adjustment for me. Good tune, though.

Man, I don’t like any of those last three openers at all. Yuck.

Who Ever Said is about 790,000 times better than those songs.

Not really a fan of Getaway much. LW and GSMF are alright. WES is easily much better than all three.

LW is ok-ish, GSMF is awful- it might be my least favorite PJ song, and Getaway is just kinda dumb and completely forgettable.

From what I understand this is much more standard now and has nothing to do with the virus, and just how the world has changed since the 90s
