some beautiful cinematography, but ultimately fails.
4/10?
i find that to be one of the worst combinations of movies. not this one in particular (i haven't seen it), but movies that feel/look good and are not worth the time.

I literally fell asleep at the cinema. I've never done that before in my life.

I've had to really fight sleep a few times, but not because the movie was bad, usually it was just real late showings after a long days work, and the one time i did fall asleep for a bit was on a 2nd viewing of kiss the girls

I kinda like movies that look great but are short on plot. Generally, I'll take mood over substantive plot points or dialogue.

My sister lied. She said it was on Netflix and it is not. I'm currently acquiring the movie by alternative means and will watch it tonight.

We watched Inception (my second time) last night. I have kinda decided that I don't like this movie. I love the slower moments of the movie and story line about DiCaprio's wife getting lost in the subconscious, but that last hour-long action-y sequence is just too much. It's like this great movie that gets interrupted by a bad Bond movie.

I heard about this movie late last summer, which was right after I watched The Shining for the first time; I hadn't thought about it in ages, but when I saw you guys mention it here, I downloaded it and watched it today. I thought it was really good overall, it had me going, "Huh...wow," many times throughout, and also, "Yeah....right!" It presents a bunch of different readings of the film, and chances are you'll buy into some of them and totally disagree with others, so it's fun to fight with the TV in that respect. Out of all of them, the reading of the film as being about past-ness and the sections that thought about the layout of the hotel were the most engaging for me. The moon landing stuff was the weirdest, for sure, but when you hear some of the coincidences, it does bend your mind a bit.

I think the film suffers from the way it's marketed as revealing all of the hidden stuff Kubrick snuck into the film. Within the first five minutes I felt myself muttering, "Intentional fallacy...intentional fallacy." However, this faded away after a while and I was able to appreciate (most of) the perspectives on the film as well supported readings of the film as a complex and multi-layered text. Then, right at the end, someone mentions, "Oh, you know, authorial intent so we can't be sure." Well, duh (that kind of brought me back to the same stance I had at the beginning of the film); it's only one of the critics who says this, of course, and it's one of the more level-headed ones (if I was recognizing the voice correctly), so I'm sure many of the others don't share that view.

I'd say 8/10.

The Evil Dead remake.

I was expecting something better, but it was ok....really gory and with some good moments.

Just got done watching it.

Reconciliation. That seems to Malick's major theme in his last few movies. You can always go home again and it's a beautiful thing. With a statement that is that honest and heart felt, it's hard for me to judge this as a movie.

But I will compare it to Tree of Life. This movie doesn't even come close to the heights TTOL reached, but that's all right. It was repetitive at times and used a lot of the same shots and actions as in TTOL. Its resolve wasn't as poignant.

Where TTOL centered on youth, family, and faith, To the Wonder concentrated on faith & love in a marriage. I know Malick's next couple films will be about the Austin, Texas music scene with Lawless, and the soul searching Hollywood Christian Bale in Knight of Cups. Each has its own unique spin, but ultimately it deals with that faith and reconciling.

I think I like what he says:

"The enigmatic spell of enchantment it casts is a work of complex artistry, and the sneering reviews say more about the critics, I am afraid, than about the film or its director." - Andrew Hehir (Salon)

"Like Someone in Love". Lovely.

Image
"The Great North Korean Picture Show". Sometimes fascinating, sometimes a bit of a chore to watch. Overall, glad I saw it.

Image
"El Critico". I enjoyed it. Wasn't blown away.

Image
"Big Easy Express". Very enjoyable. Short and sweet.

Image
"Vic+Flo ont vu un ours". A bit startling. I liked it a lot.
