I got a bad stomach about halfway through a 50-mile race once. The end result was not pretty, but I finished the damn race. Luckily, it rained and the course became a mess, so everyone just figured it was mud.

this picture in reaction to that story made me laugh hard when i saw it. today while i was at the gym running, i thought of it, and i started laughing on the treadmill.
well, week 2 of marathon training has come with its share of aches and pains. the inside of my left shin hurts when i walk. it doesn't hurt at all when i'm sedentary, and it actually only bothers me for the first mile or so when i'm running. i'm icing frequently and hoping it's something i can just live with.
monday was an off day and then it went 4, 5, 4, 4, so the weekday runs weren't too bad. i've been running at an 8 minute mile pace. if i could do that for the marathon, i'd be over the moon. the weekend was supposed to be 5 today and 10 tomorrow. since my leg has been aching, i thought i'd do the 10 early this morning and then have sunday and monday off to rest. i set the 8 mile pace and just hoped i'd be able to keep it. the first hour was fine. i never felt great, but i never felt like i wouldn't be able to finish. i took a gu rocktane energy gel for the first time ever about 40 minutes in. i don't know if it was because of that, but mile 9 was the best of the day. it felt effortless. it also got me to thinking i should just run the 10 and 5 all at once. and that's just what the fuck i did. 15 miles in 1:59:32. for the last mile i was messing around with the speed, so when it was time to stop, i didn't have much left. only after i got off the treadmill did my knees start to scream. icing as i type. felt like a successful day, though.
