Grabbed that cash a long time ago. Just have to do it differently now.
They don't *have to* do any of this stuff. I've never read an argument that's proved this to me. They're doing what they want to be doing, but some of it is far from necessary.

how many tens of thousands of people just heard that song who wouldn't have heard it before. I've read quite a few interviews with artists who talk about how this kind of song placement is one of the more effective mechanisms available right now for introducing people to your work.
Of course real artists don't actually want people listening to their music. It undermines the purity of the composition.
I wonder if pearl jam is actively seeking this stuff out or if people come to them (or both). we are probably at the point where people who grew up listening to them are the ones making these sorts of decisions.

I'm sure the shows are reaching out to them, and its been happening since Ten. They just softened their stance on these things over time. I don't think they'll ever allow their music to be used in product commercials though.

I remember at the '03 show in San Diego, Eddie claimed that they were offered a large sum of money by Viagra to use their song in a commercial.
It was to have a penis running around singing the chorus. "So we refused millions of dollars so our song wouldn't be sung by a giant cock"
... If ANY of this is true, this is probably one of their business decisions I disagree the most with. I think that commercial would be fantastic.

heh, fair enough, that's one. It does endorse Target, even though its really a commercial for their album. I was thinking more along the lines of a specific product.

The specific product is Target. I think it's getting to the point where some people will never stop saying "They will never...", because the goalposts are so easy to move.

It is really lol-able that quote came from the same guy in the Target commercial.

It is Target, but the commercial is a music video for the lead single off of their album that can be bought (mostly exclusively) at target. No difference between that and a Viagra commercial?
(I would be bothered a lot less these days if they did have their songs appearing in a product commercial, but that's because this stuff bothers me less now than it did 15 years ago. It would still bother me a little bit, just much less than the hue and cry that would be raised by others)
