That Howard Stern interview is pretty cool....About the ex letter, it remind me a story a friend of mine told me, she worked in the production team of the first time STP came to Argentina.
The band was ok, very friendly and cool, they traveled and stay together but Weiland was a mess. He was apart from the band, he didnt want to use the production van because " everyone there is a fbi agent" and then went to the stadium alone in a taxi. He came in a little late but everything was fine, and the show was great.
So yeah, the guy was difficult to say at least.

No doubt...But the ex's letter illustrates the way everyone else (herself included) was an enabler. They all had enough money that they didn't NEED to keep touring, but they kept rolling him out and propping him up despite his demons. Makes me hate the whole lot of them, despite loving the first few records.
The band? i think those guys did what they could. And they loved playing live.

Yes, the band. And I disagree that they did what they could. What they COULD have done is said, "No more STP until this dude is healthy."
But I have a hard heart when it comes to musicians. I've spent my whole life around them, and I'm convinced that 99% of them are doing it for the ego, with 1% doing it because its their soul's destiny. The Deleo bros. and Kretz strike me as part of the 99%.
Well, they kinda did that 3 times. And at the same time, they did 3 more records.
i think until this last fight that led into Chester being into the band, they kinda tried to make it work.

Listening to Shangri-LA DEE DA for the first time since I initially wrote it off years ago. Some good songs, but Jesus the production is so PRAMG-terrible. BOB did this, didn't he?

Had the exact same experience yesterday. But No 4 was better than I had remembered it being.
No. 4 is hands-down my favorite STP record, which was only cemented by my recent run-through of their material.

I used to really stick up for Shangri-LA. All my friends hated it and I tried to tell them it was super underrated.
After listening yesterday, I'd 100% agree with you, verm. Some really great songs but the production is blech.

"Dumb Love" is a shockingly misleading way to open the album. It's almost mean.

I really need to spend some more time with Self Titled
When #4 came out I felt it was far inferior to the first 3 so pretty much wrote it off.
Big hard rock riffs and sappy ballads. I re listened this week and it is better than I recall.
Shangri La, I really enjoyed from the start but it wasn't as good as I remembered when I listened this week. I really enjoy some of the songs but it is just too all over the place.
Would have been really interesting to see how the double album came out if they followed through on that plan.
"Long Way Down", "Transmissions from a Lonely Room" and "Hello, Its Late" are all pretty top notch

There's no low end, which STP have always thrived on. It sounds thin and overly crisp (not in a good way). Anemic. Distant. Detached. I'm no expert, but I suspect some brickwalling is at play.

I dont think it sounds as glossy and mainstream as LB.
BUT Shangri Laa is a better album so maybe its because the songs are better.

VG, put on No. 4 and then play Shangri-La immediately after. You'll hear what he's talking about.
