Still Krennic should have feared meeting Anakin from ROTS, he would probably have ended up dead. This is him 30 years later. Years where he has held a powerful position in the empire as the terrible leader Darth Vader. I think we are supposed to look at Vader in disgust, not in awe. The prequels would have failed if they ended with us loving and respecting Vader.

Still, your points hold.

Also, Strat... the way around it is to have your kids read the Darth Vader comic series that takes place after ROTS before watching R1. That series is SO badass. The stuff they're doing to show Vader becoming Vader is just... I mean...
Very much agreed. They’re doing an EXCELLENT job with it.

I mean, at the end of RotS, didn't they show Anakin getting the Vader suit/body modifications? So as long as you know it is two decades after that, I think you can watch Rogue One and say "whoa, they are all paranoid of that dude now, he must have done some shit in the past 20 years".

Well he’s respected and feared and he’s not. Remember the guy in the conference room in a new hope giving him shit and getting choked for it. They’ve really retconned that lack of respect in the books generally speaking. He’s the emperors hand outside the military but they do have to listen to him as the emperors representive.

I was just referring to Rogue One specifically. Everyone in that film that worked for the Empire seemed to not want to have to deal with him.

And that's okay, man. Celebrating Star Wars doesn't mean you have to love all of it. There's enough to go around.

Rogue One feels like the Star Wars version of Backspacer for me.

Its light, its great, has all the hits, but its missing some of the meat. Which is understandable considering the trilogies are allowed to play out over a number of movies, whereas these spin off movies are being told in a much shorter time span and are not allowed to dig as deep into character development.

I can see where you're coming from. I responded pretty strongly to the characters in Rogue One, though. So I don't share your criticisms with the film. I think it's a gorgeous, emotional film that helps fill out the world before the events of A New Hope. To me it provides broader context to the rebellion and to the stakes, as well as to the "magic" of Luke and the Force.

But I totally get why others didn't really respond to it as much. It's a different kind of Star Wars movie, for sure. It punched me right in the gut and felt like the closest we've come to "the Star Wars movie I would want to make," so far. Of course, my Star Wars movie would have more Jedi. But the tone and the scope and themes were all their. Also, Gareth Edwards sure can shoot a fucking movie. Goddamn.

For me AotC = Lightning Bolt and RotS = Backspacer.

Rogue One is more of a No Code for me

This was the post I made back in March (page 230-something; 238?):

The Phantom Menace = Binaural
Attack of the Clones = Backspacer
Revenge of the Sith = Lighting Bolt
A New Hope = Ten
The Empire Strikes Back = Vitalogy
Return of the Jedi = Vs
The Force Awakens = Yield
Rogue One = No Code
