Both FD and LB played randomly on my phone this morning. Neither have changed for me and both didn't get a full play.
Right on.harmless wrote:Agreed, yep. But that listening and reciprocation on stage is part of what makes a virtuoso musician, so that's a big part of what I meant. The reason jazz musicians are so great at improv is that their ears are fine-tuned to what the rest of the band is doing, so that if one of them is enjoying a part that, say, the pianist is playing, they can instantly get on and ride it. Because PJ are all about the big, singular bombasic effect now -- and not so interested in that interplay between the players -- I'm not so interested in their jams. It's like they assume that most of their fans will be happy if they just do any kind of waffling for as long as possible. And, well, there are plenty of fans that would take any kind of jam from them, no matter what it sounded like.Kevin Davis wrote:I think the jam had its in-bloom phase too--it's exactly the sort of thing the band was in the frame of mind to pull off during, say, the 2000 tour, a few moments of introverted catharsis where nothing mattered beyond the five guys onstage. But like itself the song has since 1995-6, the jam has been pretty lifeless since about 2003. It's really not about being virtuoso musicians, it's just about having the presence of mind to listen to what the other guys in the band are doing, and new-and-improved extroverted shout-it-from-the-rooftops Pearl Jam just aren't conditioned for the sort of patience and focus required for improvised music in general, let alone a passage like this that's about collective mood and texture rather than just a band supporting a soloist.dimejinky99 wrote:harmless wrote:Just to clarify: I love RVM (studio version), it's one of my favourite early PJ songs. But if I get it live and I check my watch during the 'jam' in the middle, it's because all of the tension has been sapped out of the song by the band's wankery, and then by the intro I'm not interested anymore. The studio version (and some earlier live versions I guess) had just enough tension and release. If these guys were virtuoso musicians and able to carry a ridiculously long jam session, it might be a different story, but they aren't, so it isn't.
Agreed. That jam can be nuclear winter in length sometimes.
Steals from the immediacy and intention of the song.
Sorry, computer died then had some meetings. I actually like ballads. When Backspacer came out I listened to Just Breathe...alot. Crown of Thorns, Release, Nothingman, Off He Goes and Sleight of Hand are in my Top Ten. (I know not all those are ballads exactly)harmless wrote:Same with Everybody Hurts. I'm guessing you're just not inclined towards ballads, because these are two of the best.
Is that to me or verb_to_trust? Or both?Cleverman wrote:Based on some of your posts, I have to ask, are you a self-hatin' PJ fan?verb_to_trust wrote:Oh don't you worry, you'll get it.....and there is no way in the world it will have anything in the same universe as Nightswimming.ItsOkay wrote:Possibly...just give me a new Pearl Jam album!
So does that mean post-Riot Act, or including Riot Act?verb_to_trust wrote:It was directed at me. I haven't liked a Pearl Jam song since Down. Although the two leaked songs were sort of neat.
So what's its going to take this album to win you back?verb_to_trust wrote:I literally never listen to BS and Avocado.
Same. They only came out again very recently during my normal "listen through the whole catalogue in the lead up to the new album" phase. Both albums only got one spin, and that was enough.verb_to_trust wrote:I literally never listen to BS and Avocado.
Oddly, ST and Yield are my most played recently.Sgt. Crackpot wrote:Same. Many of the other albums had many repeat spins, taking me back to the good ol' days.
Something is wrong with the site. It shows Sgt. Crackpot with a world record setting amount of posts for just over a month.Sgt. Crackpot wrote: Same. But there is still the real possibility that 1 song, ONE SONG, may sneak through and join your list of favs.verb_to_trust wrote:ItsOkay wrote:So what's its going to take this album to win you back?verb_to_trust wrote:I literally never listen to BS and Avocado.
Its not going to.
I mean, I could type up a perfect world scenario but we've already heard 25 percent of this thing and I don't hear anything with any staying power. FD actually sounds downright bad. If you believe that Sleeping By Myself and Cold Concession/Let It Ride will be on that leaves 6 songs. And while it would be nice to have the Avocado songs polished up and released it would be pretty troubling that 7 year old leftovers and a uke song would make it onto a record that took 4 and a half years to make. You probably also have to take into account a throw away song a la Big Wave or Red Dot.....
Those aren't throwaways!verb_to_trust wrote:You probably also have to take into account a throw away song a la Big Wave or Red Dot.....
Nope, nothing wrong with the site at all, man. 60% of my posts are animated gifs. 30% are just general nonsensical bullshit. 10% is a mixture of possibly useful information, and me declaring my heterosexual love for various males on this board.gems and rhinestones wrote:Something is wrong with the site. It's quite easy to post a ton this crap in such a short period of time.
I don't mean to trash those songs but like I said, we've potentially heard half this thing already so the inevitable quirky fun tune or instrumental would just mean less space for the best case scenario for me, which is 4 or 5 songs I can load onto my ipod.Kevin Davis wrote:Those aren't throwaways!verb_to_trust wrote:You probably also have to take into account a throw away song a la Big Wave or Red Dot.....
That said, I kind of feel like all the songs we have so far are throwaways.
I'm holding out hope for that other 75%. Mike said there is a melody, some hard punk and then some more experimental, Pink Floyd-like stuff. We already have the melody and punk, but nothing in that last category. So we can altleast look forward to some attempt(s) at it. I haven't listened to FD or LB since the live stream of the Wrigley concert. I'd rather delay disappointment by still holding tight to some hope, rather than listen and be reminded of how they need some crazy studio work to make them even touch the top 30% of the PJ catalog.verb_to_trust wrote:ItsOkay wrote:So what's its going to take this album to win you back?verb_to_trust wrote:I literally never listen to BS and Avocado.
