Regarding that Tigray business in Ethiopia:

Uber driver today was Eritrean*. Resettled here after qualifying for asylum, eligible for citizenship last year but delayed because of Covid.

I broached the topic, asking about where he was from, but he didn't seem to mind and gave a whole history of the conflict and showed us a photo of his dad with his weapon and family back in the day.

Anyhow, from the Eritrean expat point of view, there's anxiety that the TPLF (Tigray Peoples Liberation Front) is on the march and looking for vengeance. Seems insane that they would fight a two front war against Eritrea and the central Ethiopian government.

He believes the US threat of removing aid was involved in the Ethiopian government forces withdrawal/ rout. Maybe this is incontestible, but I haven't seen much coverage of US diplomatic involvement.

Unrelated, in something that smacks a bit like Sikh feelings toward Gandhi: the Italians weren't so terrible because they gave Eritrea a separate state, but the British decision to include us in Ethiopia led to more than 30 years of conflict.

*Being eligible for conscription in Eritrea is generally grounds for asylum due to conditions in the Eritrean military
