I guess the lyrics? not sure. I love how it doesnt hide its love for Tom Petty. It even gets their keyboardist!! And i was blown away with the ohana performance they released as a pro shot video.

Right.

So far I've heard "it sounds too much like..." --- everything sounds like something else

It doesn't resolve --- not every song has to

I don't hate Long Way, but there's definitely a difference between being inspired by Tom Petty and doing Tom Petty karaoke. It's not even that it's Petty karaoke, it's just that the way of paying homage is trying to write the most rote version of a Tom Petty song, who was typically way more creative than that.

Eddie and the Pearl Jams have been subscribing to this method of music making since 1991; a massive chunk of their catalogue is just musical odes to other artists; granted, they've done a lot better than Long Way, but I'm also not at all surprised that Long Way happened

noooooooooooooo

There's been a wide variety of comparisons to this one. A more upbeat Daughter, Sirens, Small Town, Betterman, and now Long Way. It is a bit unnerving but I'm holding out because I read somewhere that the song is in open G tuning, so that should at least give it some unique flavor and perhaps that's why it's being compared to Daughter?

Either way, if it's catchy and a possible hit, then there is no way PJ actually releases it as a single. That would make too much sense.

Definitely, they've been inspired, often overtly, and every song will make its own case. I'm sure there are times when PJ strays from this, but I feel like they usually do something with those influences, even if the songs are heavily evocative of other artists. I think the problem w/ Long Way is less the Petty influence, and more that it sounds like what you'd get if you asked AI for a Tom Petty song. But I should give it another listen; it's been quite a while.

I always thought Long Way was more of an ode to the Beastie Boys.

I'm pretty much done with Ed's Petty & Springsteen worship bleeding into Pearl Jam records, at this point. We always knew we were getting at least one Who "tribute" per album, but, I don't need 1/3rd of the total runtime to be homages. Pretty much a guaranteed instant skip from me.

If I want pastiches done intelligently, I listen to Ween.

Here's what you actually get when you ask an AI for a Tom Petty song: https://voca.ro/1kecU6wopccA
