From what I read, it sounds like they're worried that the masks will provide people with a false sense of security that will keep them from taking other more important precautions (social distancing, washing hands, etc), rendering any potential benefits completely moot. Seems specious to me but what do I know

That means to me the govt doesn't have much faith in people.

It could be solved instead by saying:

I can see it. I work in our hospital's renal department where we wear PPE all shift. We don't social distance at all. If we were wearing homemade masks it would be the same I bet.

So all Texas needs to do is lock down and they'll magically contain the virus. Make it so.

We heard the same argument in the US a while back. I kind of feel the opposite - the masks are a constant reminder that we're on high alert.

Yeah, that was the reasoning used before we did an about-face in the States.
