Does Pearl Jam have a particular or defining sound? Is there a characteristic about them that makes a song sound like a Pearl Jam song? The obvious answer is Ed's voice, but I'm thinking more so the music. Guitar tones? Song structures? Like if a Zeppelin song comes on, you're like, "oh yeah that's Zeppelin". Or a Grateful Dead or Who song have characteristics that clue you in pretty quickly. What about PJ?

that's a good question. They always struck me as chameleons - the sound changed from record to record, with Ed as the unifying framework. There's a feel and a structure to pearl jam's music more than a sound, methinks

Jeff´s bass sound was very recognizable for me in the first couple of albums, specially Ten or Mother Love Bone. And i would say the same of Mike´s sound from Temple Of The Dog and Ten.

I have seen guitar players say he has a very recognizable style.

for a chunk of the contemporary PJ era, Matt's spritzy snare was a fairly signature sound

You guys think "I Got ID" could possibly be about Ed getting carded while trying to buy alcohol? As in "I Got I.D."?

I can't put my finger on it, but I believe there is. Right before Gigaton came out, there was that Super Bowl commercial with Harrison Ford and it was for a charity for firefighters and they played an instrumental version of River Cross during it. I had never heard River Cross but I recognized the music even though I didn't know it was Pearl Jam at that moment.

I need to read that part of your book so I apologize if it's covered, but I think the song is about abandonment leading to loneliness and an inability to fulfill unconscious needs.

And getting carded. A song can have layers!

How is Ed not participating in this Patti Smith tribute show? Springsteen, Sean Penn, Glen Hansard, but no Ed?

The drum splash transition from Free Jazz into Last Exit is more impactful than the transition from Sometimes into Hail Hail.

truth

Most days I hate the transition from sometimes into Hail Hail. It shatters the contemplative mood, but it doesn't kick off an extend run of hard rocking songs, and it's not like Hail Hail leans into its heaviness. That's a contemplative song in its way. it plays more like a jump scare than something with emotional resonance or musical inventiveness

That makes sense to me. Although I’m not a big fan of either song, In My Tree or Smile would be better right after Sometimes.

Smile should have closed it as a bonus track and been a single. All Night should have followed Sometimes.
