You gotta wonder. Snoke ordered Hux to go get kylo, who was wrecked in the forest after Rey taking him apart, do you think he thought even for a second, 'Fuck him. I can just say I couldn't find him' and let the bastard die on starkiller as it exploded?
I mean they hated each other after all.

I really don't think that the R1 marketing was an issue. Trailers always show things that end up on the cutting room floor

I wouldn't be surprised if he did think that before then remembering rusty pissing off Snoke by obeying a direct order is probably not a great idea.

Guy I know is kinda in with the Lucasfilm people and he's saying Luke's got a lot more guilt than just failing Kylo/Ben and there's way more to it. It's mad dark and we're not gonna like it apparently.

My guess is him and Snoke were probably working together to a point and Luke then realised what he was an accomplice to. It's probably about Padawans and warping them into soldiers/KOR or even killing the ones that don't make the grade.
