Baze and Chirrut generally lack any meaningful motivation. Both are fairly underwritten characters.
I think this is kind of the point of the movie though. Give you just enough of a character to show you that there are all these people out there that care about the rebellion cause, and what they will go through for that belief. I don't need to know more. I want to, sure, but it also adds a little intrigue for me.

Anakin has an episode in clone wars where he goes on a mission to rescue or retrieve R2 who is lost but even that isn’t out of any equal respect, it’s because the droid knows too much and he’s his pal. Kind of.
The crew of the Ghost and Chopper?

They weren’t a part of the rebellion, though. A little motivation as to why they go to sharif would go a long way

But wasn't it said in the movie that they were guardians of the whills, of the kiber temple? So if the Empire is stealing all of the kiber, certainly they'd have reason to join.

They were just lazing around doing nothing since then until chirrut decides to randomly start killing imperials to help Jon (it’s not like there werent active chances to get involved before) because the force tells him to? None of it is crazy, just underwritten. We just need a scene or a little bit more dialogue to make the motivation stronger

But this is stuff that is really important to me in a movie - it's not what Rogue One does particularly well, but there are plenty of other things it has going for it (it is visually stunning, the action is thrilling, it makes effective use of existing Star Wars history, mythology, and iconography). It's a good movie.

Oh god, I’m so glad they didn’t “develop” them through unnecessary dialog about their backstory and motivations. How fucking boring. Go watch a TV show if you want bland “development” like that. Like any great, cinematic movie, R1 shows instead of tells.

Less story more chase sequences and explosions?
I mean it could do both.

I don't think that is what LV is saying at all.

showing instead of telling is great. im not talking about an exposition dump, But R1 isnt doing either as effectively as it might with these two characters.

I cannot Fucking stand this guy Steele Saunders but he has a brilliant interview with Ben Mendelson who’s played Krennic in Rogue one. There’s loads of good stuff in here.

I listened to that podcast. I listen to The Moment a lot. It's always inspirational even when it's annoying. Tony Gilroy, as talented as he is, is probably not I guy I'd like to hang out with.

very candid comments about a production from a studio that is about to own 60% of the IP in Hollywood

just reading the art of the last jedi yesterday and i didnt realise this but TFA Rogue one and TLJ were all in production at the same time and were shot back to back only weeks apart, so all the behind the scenes people pretty much worked solid for about 4 years..that's impressive when you look at it..especially when it comes to rogue ones woes..they only took breaks for christmas..
most impressive
