So if they're putting the smack down on the vids...what does that mean? They wanted to do something with these tracks at some point in the future?

These leaks reinforce my biggest fear about Lightning Bolt that no matter how long it has been since the last album or how much the fans want a complete album of great songs from beginning to end, Pearl Jam is just unwilling to put all of its best songs on the table.

People do. I do. They're going for the mid-tier PJ fan, who are worthy PJ fans. I know I'm a "fanboy" defender on here, but I've gone to a dozen shows, have never traveled to see them. In my mind, I'm a hardcore fan, but nothing like some people. I think there's a certain breed of music lover they want to connect to in the modern era. Not everyone can be pleased and can be on board. I'm using "festival headliner" not in some kind of commercially competitive way, but as a benchmark for what sort of fans might be exposed and could dig the music. Those fans would probably shy away from posting around here and probably only go to shows when they're in town, but they're still fans who love music.

Not necessarily. Just because you want to go re live some glory day and fist pump to alive and scream fuck during Jeremy doesnt make you a "music fan".

And ultimately, pointless argument, Pearl Jam branded themselves as artists once upon a time. This is not an artistic approach to their music.

To be fair I imagine it could be tricky to get 5-7 people to all agree on the same tracks to put on an album. I'm not sure if Boom has much say in it or the producer which is why I said 5-7.

I'm English, have seen them 3 times, and would say I've been a 'hardcore fan'. I reject the idea that 'hardcore fan' means you've seen them seventy times on tour. I've loved their music and now think it's shit more often than not. If they are trying to reach me, they are more or less failing. And releasing these vault tracks did not help.

Guy next to him asked him to put out his cigarette, guy proceeded to stand up and blow smoke into his face, when he told him to stop and sit down the guy punched him in the face 3 times then took off running!

I know security caught the guy, and im sure he was arrested and has charges coming down the wire, but I hope that 10 Club keeps tabs on which seats they give out to which members and revokes the memberships of those who cause problems like this! Guy was a total dick and represented the 10C and all the other Bostonians who visited in a poor light!!

But what people were saying is true... festivalgoers who don't know PJ that well are there to rock out to Ten songs, Daughter, and Corduroy/Better Man. They're not thinking "man, they really need to play Army Reserve or Unthought Known." They're there for the massive hits.

The band sold out plenty of shows on their Riot Act tour, and that was for maybe their least commercial record ever. It wouldn't have really mattered if their last two records had been less commercial, IMO. It wouldn't have helped or hurt them much in the big scheme.

I would say really only one person in the band has much say unless he asks for anyone else's opinion.

The point is that I - and many music fans - don't really give a shit about any fan demographics beyond how the intensity of the band's considerations of such things impacts their songwriting. Fixating on precisely these extra-compositional issues prevents Pearl Jam from keeping their collective eyes on the ball, and - as evidenced by these releases - the music is the poorer for it.
