I applaud Hawley for what he tried to do but he was out of his depth.
Still, Is be willing to change the grade to a B-

Two eps in and loving it. I would’ve been perfectly content with a remake of the movie, as it first seemed to be, but thrilled to see this being its own thing.

Looks like it may end up being Dot, Lorraine and everybody against Roy. After seeing the file, there’s no way Lorraine doesn’t back Dot.

And I really wanted Indira to punch her fucking husband in the face when he was having his whining spell. And I REALLY hope she accepts Lorraine’s offer.

Through the first four, really good. Not sure what the hell went wrong with the previous season but it appears they've shaken it off.

Can someone explain the not so subtle wizard of oz theme? I’m not quiet grasping all of it

Re: TV: Fargo
Don't think of it as a one to one comp or anything like that. It's a broader, overarching motif.Bi_3 wrote:Can someone explain the not so subtle wizard of oz theme? I’m not quiet grasping all of it
Hawley has said that the film Fargo (to him) is about capitalism/greed and the impact thereof on "Americana." He's used that big idea to frame every season.
On top of that, Hawley has also said he views The Wizard of Oz as one of the only true, purely American myths.
Baum's original book has long had political interpretations. Many see it as an allegory for class struggle, capitalism v socialism, and monetary policy. Vey similar themes to what Hawley is exploring in Fargo.
Though more overt this season (this may have to do with the WHEN and WHY Hawley set this season) the Oz allusions have been in the show since the beginning. Let's not forget last season's exceptional black and white tornado episode.

Nothing deflates me more than "it was all a dream" in stories. Which of course makes this the most paradoxical TV experience I can remember in a long, long fucking time.tragabigzanda wrote:This was a trip.Ensign9 wrote:Incredible episode (5x07). Give Fargo the Emmy now.

Dorothy = Dot
Toto = the kid
Wicked Witch of the West = Roy Tillman
Tin Man = Gator
Scarecrow = Wayne (or the FBI agents)
Cowardly Lion = Indira
Wicked Witch of the East = Lorraine (but she may turn into Glinda the Good Witch)
Flying Monkeys = Munch/Graves
Not sure who the male cop is, but he’s also disappeared from the last couple episodes
This list is probably right, thematically it has been woven in at many places but seemed more important in 5x07. I dunno.

Just want to point out again that there may not be a real one to one here.tragabigzanda wrote:Hadn’t thought about this until now but:Bi_3 wrote:Can someone explain the not so subtle wizard of oz theme? I’m not quiet grasping all of it

But also a reminder that this whole season is about subversion. It literally starts with a subversion of the wife kidnapping from the Fargo film. So maybe we shouldn't be thinking of what these characters have in common with characters from Oz. Or if we do think about them that way, maybe we should also keep an eye out for how things won't go the way we think. The subversion might be more important in cracking any potential code.

I think Gator and Roy's crew are the Flying Monkeys though.
