1. Pearl Jam
2. REM
3. Mark Lanegan
4. Tom Waits

5 is currently James. At different points Tool (once as high as 3) and Dan Bern have also been top 5able.

Im not sure I can pick only five! But Pearl Jam and The Stone would be there probably. But it would change every time.

Modest Mouse is my #2 and the only band that really approaches Pearl Jam in my heart. But aside from them, I remember sort of being “on the lookout” for other potential successors back around 2000, just in case PJ didn’t endure.

Possibilities included Remy Zero, Ike Reilly Assassination, and JJ72.

yep, me too. the different PJ drummers taught me a lot growing up, listening to the differences in style on bootlegs etc.

Guitarist for me. Stone back in the day , I thought he was on his way to Townsend status. I really appreciate Ed's right hand .

But the older I get the more I'm digging back into albums/artists from my formative years like Black Crowes, Soundgarden, Gomez, Therapy. Not sure if it's my age, but the 90s really seemed like a particularly rich decade.

James is a great example of a band that can have a late career resurgence creatively and commercially. Nearly 40 years in and going strong.

my relationship with james (and tom waits and lanegan) are how I approach deep long term fandom. all of those artists have perfect and near perfect front to back listens. but half their (extensive) catalogs will have albums with somewhere from 4-7 songs I quite like and the rest are fine - mostly skippable unless i feel like an album listen. I dont need everything to be great - i just want some more songs to love

I think this is precisely why so many of PJ'S albums seem better to me once they have the patina of age. When they're first released I have unrealistic expectations. It's unreasonable but I expect perfection. A few years later I appreciate them for what they are. Vitalogy, No Code, Binaural were all quite underwhelming to me at the time of release but are huge favourites now.

agreed. although more likely to me with pearl jam on the albums towards the bottom half of my list (no code through riot ac) i convinced myself i liked some more than I did and the albums came down to earth. Except for No Code each of those albums spent months in my top 3. possibly two. its been less prominent ST/Backspacer on in part because i am less invested in needing to think a new album is one of their best. or it might be that those albums on are the ones i process with you good people, rather than by myself. RM makes it harder to overinflate.

So basically, PJ is an extreme outlier in the context of the majority of my music listening

I wouldn't even be able to narrow it down to my five favorite musical artists this morning. Can I do a top 500, entirely unranked?

Unranked is a dirty, dirty word around here...
