I'm honestly shocked, although I can't think of a good reason why it should be surprising. Maybe just because his name has been floated often for the last few years. Good for the Jays. They lead the AL with a +95 run differential. Maybe this move will help them take the East.

And Reyes to the Rockies.

I have an irrational love of the July 31 trade deadline.

I'm actually really sad for Reyes... but, you know, holy shit!

Nice move, but they really need pitching. No chance for winning the East at this point, but the wildcard is still very possible.

I almost agree about the East, but the Jays and Yankees play 13 more times this year.

This trade really doesn't make a whole lot of sense for either of them, but especially not for Toronto.

With as many blocked prospects as Toronto has and with all of that money to spend next year I wonder if something is still in the hopper for a trade for a starting pitcher?

I read today Stroman might be ready in September? That could be huge.

I guess it makes sense for the Rockies if these prospects are any good, I just don't know much about them. But they have to flip Reyes now, right?

Absolutely. Story is almost ready in the minors and they just drafted that Rogers kid. I bet they trade Reyes in the offseason if I had to guess. Or maybe package Story and another prospect or two for someone like Tyson Ross. The Dads need a SS.

They are probably banking on Tulo staying healthy and DH-ing now and again? Hard to say. I like the trade for them if Tulo can get 500 ABs a year. With the DH that is a high possibility. There are only a handful of guys in the game better when Tulo is healthy. They might really regret trading Hoffman but just a day or two ago he was "untouchable".

I mean, they already had a pretty damned good shortstop, swapped him for a better one, and in the process lost 3 pitching prospects when their actual need is pitching. It's absurd, the more you think about it.

I was a little surprised they traded three pitching prospects. They did keep Norris and Hutchinson. Again they will have a lot of money to spend in the offseason too. I really don't think the Jays are done making moves. Just my 2 cents.

Either way, this move doesn't really make them better. They have no problem scoring runs. Their differential is like +95 and they're a .500 team.

You can improve your team by scoring more and by preventing runs. The Jays improved their offense by quite a bit. They improved their defense by quite a bit. They did so without increasing payroll. Hoffman is a really good prospect who I didn't want the Jays to trade, but I'm ok with this. Castro and Tinoco are both solid but unspectacular prospects. The Jays have tons of guys like them.

I wish I could remember where, but Zips projection system has Tulowitzki providing $40 million additional value beyond his contract, while Reyes projects for -$20 million. So there's a difference of $60M between the players. That's worth giving up some good prospects for.

Jose Reyes has been solid but underwhelming in Toronto. Troy Tulowitzki is a much, much better player.

Very surprised they traded Sean Manaea. KC was super high on that kid.
