New Zealand is reportedly taking aggressive steps to eradicate cigarette use in future generations. According to the BBC, the country’s government is planning to enact a law in 2022 that would phase in an eventual ban on smoking for all young adults.
Here’s how it would work, according to the Washington Post: Starting in 2027 and every year thereafter, NZ will raise the minimum age for cigarette purchases by one year. Currently, that age threshold is 18. If the plan takes effect, it would mean everyone born in 2009 or later will never be legally able to purchase cigarettes in New Zealand in their lifetimes.
‘We want to make sure young people never start smoking,’ NZ Associate Health Minister Dr. Ayesha Verrall said to the BBC.
Approximately 10% of New Zealand adults are currently smokers, per WaPo.
